Master Degree in Marine Sciences - Marine Resources

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
Institutions involved: To ensure high diversity and quality of the training offer, this Master's Degree has been offered jointly and since its genesis by ICBAS and IPMA (former IPIMAR, Fisheries and Sea Research Institute), counting with the permanent and close participation of CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research) and ELA (Littoral Station of Aguda). There are partnerships with COMPANIES, promoting training internships (via Free Options) and the realization of dissertations and annual internships in a professional environment.


Access qualifications: 
May apply for the Master's Degree in Marine Sciences - Marine Resources (MCMRM) holders of a bachelor's degree or its legal equivalent in areas of life sciences. Candidates under other conditions are also admissible, namely under Article 17, of Decree-Law No.74/2006, as amended by Decree-Law No. 65/2018. In this context, holders of an especially relevant academic, scientific, or professional curriculum that is recognised as attesting the ability to carry out the cycle of studies may apply, at the time of the analysis of the applications by the Scientific Committee of the cycle of studies, according to the admission criteria and sub-criteria that are annually defined and publicly announced.

Duration of the master's degree: 2 years.

Schedule: Monday to Friday and, very occasionally, Saturdays. Mornings (especially) and/or afternoons, depending on the teaching period, up to 20-25 hours per week. As far as possible, adjusted to the needs of master’s students and in particular to the constraints of working students.

Objectives

This master’s degree provides knowledge and promotes skills that ensure the advanced training of professionals capable of intervening in the research and management of the sea and coastal areas, in the sustained development of aquaculture and fisheries, and in the creation of added value for the marine ecosystem resources and services. Teaching promotes gains in professional and personal skills, emphasising practical aspects and the progression of initiative and creativity. This master's degree is oriented towards the study of the biota that inhabits the oceans and coastal areas, considering them as part of a dynamic environment that needs to be preserved and as limited natural resources whose exploitation is intense and complex, requiring qualified individuals.
