Through the description of contents and practical reflections, this curricular unit aims to present to the students:
1.The different concepts related to psychological first aid in crisis and catastrophe situations, as well as the laws and articulation with civil protection agents in the operations theater.
2. The psychological/emotional impact of crisis and catastrophe situations and the different action models for emotional stabilization, their specificities and their contexts of application.
3.In survivors and professionals, the symptoms of stress, post-traumatic stress, burnout and compassion fatigue, as well as protective factors such as resilience, coping, post-traumatic growth and stress management strategies.
4.The possibility to interact with field professionals sharing their experiences and the ways they use to take care for others and self-care.
At the end of the course the students must be able:
- to discriminate the different concepts related to psychological first aid in crisis and disaster situations, as well as to know the regulation and the articulation with civil protection agents in the operations theater.
- to know the psychological/emotional impact of crisis and catastrophe situations and the different models of action for emotional stabilization, their specificities and contexts of application.
- to identify, in survivors and professionals, the symptoms of stress, post-traumatic stress, burnout and compassion fatigue, as well as protective factors such as resilience, coping, post-traumatic growth and stress management strategies.
- to know the perspective of professionals in the field through the sharing of their experiences and ways of caring for others and taking care of themselves.
1. Introduction: definition of concepts; regulation and articulation with civil protection agents; identification of critical incidents and crisis and catastrophe situations; screening of survivors in multi-victim situations; specificity of the operations theater and of the emotional stabilization ways.
2. Emotional/psychological impact of crisis and catastrophe situations on survivors and rescuers; vulnerability factors and protective factors; psychological emergency, acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, compassion fatigue, burnout, resilience, coping, post-traumatic growth and stress management strategies.
3. Emotional support models, with special reference to Psychological First Aid (PFA) and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM); intervention in specific cases and communication of bad news.
4. Discussion of cases and practical exercises to perform emotional stabilization, resolution of psychosocial needs, good stress management and promotion of occupational health of professionals; theory/practice differences and limitations/challenges of acting on the field in crisis or catastrophe situations; interaction with guests as field professionals to share their experiences and ways of caring for others and doing self-care.
Theoretical-expository methodologies will be used, with the help of PowerPoints, videos and TedTalks accompanied by reading and critical reflection of texts and individual participation in the debates taking place in the Moodle Forum.
Individual and group practical tasks will be performed to: demonstrate the different models of emotional stabilization and their specificity of application; relaxation training and reprogramming of the autonomic nervous system (through breathing exercises; meditative exercises; stretch/contraction exercises) and cognitive-behavioral exercises of stress management strategies.
There will also be performed discussions and collective reflections with professional guests from the field, allowing to reflect on the difficulties/differences theory/practice and about the specificity of the performance in Portuguese context.
As an autonomous study, it is foreseen and supported the reading of texts on the contents presented, with participation in the debate in the Forum and the preparation of an integrative critical reflection.

The evaluation of the theoretical component implies the participation in the Moodle Forum in debates using synchronous and asynchronous written format, integrating the contents presented, the available texts, and the individual critical reflection.
The theoretical-practical component is evaluated through the integrative written reflection about practical exercises and its articulation with the theoretical component and with the Forum.
The evaluation will always be in writing format for all participants.
The presence in class is mandatory according to the regulation in force in FPCEUP.
The final classification is the sum of the following tasks:
- 50% discussion at Moodle Forum
- 50% for the final individual/written report, with critical reflection about the exercises/practical cases
The final grade resulting from the sum of the two components must be equal to or greater than 9,5 values out of 20, and each component must obtain a minimum of 8 values.
The improvement of classification is done only for the final written work (valuing 50%); the classification of the Forum stills the same.
It is possible to improve the classification according to the regulation in force in FPCEUP.
