Objectives

This discipline aims the students to be able to:

- to know the main epistemological traditions and their importance in reflecting about scientific knowledge.

- to know the main events and theoretical movements of Psychology and situate them at the historical-cultural moment/context, especially in what concerns the Philosophy-Psychology link and the development of Psychology as science.

- to apply epistemological theories to the development of Psychology as science.

- to collect, select and interpret relevant information about History of Psychology and Epistemology applied to this.

- to present autonomous learning capacity and critical analysis in reflection about the application of Epistemology to the History of Psychology.

To think critically about the History of Psychology, and its main events, according the main theories of Epistemology.

1.Introduction: main events and theoretical movements in Psychology.


2.Epistemology: knowledge and scientific method; development of science according to the main epistemological theories (reference to Bachelard, Popper, Kuhn and Foucault).


3.History of Psychology: philosophical origins of Psychology; Psychology as an autonomous discipline in the modern era depending of space/time; reference to theoretical movements (e.g. structuralism, functionalism, associacionism; psychoanalysis, behaviorism, gestalt, humanism, cognitivism) and the main areas of Psychology (e.g. Reuchlin's organization of the 1950s and current organization by  APA); Psychology in Portugal.


4.Application of Epistemology to the History of Psychology: critical reflection on knowledge and unity in Psychology; influence of Philosophy and Positivism in the experimental studies of Wundt and Behaviorism; the study of mental diseases in France and psychoanalysis; current psychology and its application contexts.

Eligibility for exams

The students must have the minimum of 9.5 points in 20 at the global classification of the discipline. Distributed evaluation includes forum/char participation according tasks defined each week or mounth. The written final evlslation is mandatory and the student should get the minimum value of 8 values in 20. The individual participation at the Moodle Forum/chat is mandatory (25%) with the minimum classification of 8/20.  The presence in class is mandatory according to the regulation in force in FPCEUP.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification is the sum of the following tasks:
- 25% written report as an individual participation in the Moodle Forum/chat
- 75%  written final exam.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Individual participation in the Moodle Forum/chat.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students with special status can choose and decide if they want to do only the final written evaluation, without Fórum, representing this 100% of the final grade. They must inform the teacher, according information presented at Moodle platform.

Classification improvement

The improvement of classification is done only for the final writen evalution (valuing 75%); the classification of Moodle Forum/chat stills the same. It is possible to improve the classification according to the regulation defined by FPCEUP.
