1) To understand education as an individual and social process

2) To contextualize the educational process as a social and scientific object

3) To describe and discuss current Educational issues

Learning outcomes and competences

The curricular unit Foundations and Theories of Education emerges as an optional within the Master of Educational Sciences with the aim to create a space for reflection and debate on the identity andperspectives of Educational Sciences.

It is especially aimed at students who do not have an educational background in Educational Sciences.

This course is intended at contributing to the creation of a common language and the ownership of basic concepts in the scientific area of Educational Sciences

Teaching methods and learning activities

Favouring learning activities over teaching activities, this course will be developed according to the study circle methodology.

Group work, presentations and debate in the classroom constitute the core methods.

Eligibility for exams

To attain the UC, students must:

1 - Attend at least 2/3 of the planned classes

2 - Perform / participate in the development of the planned works

Calculation formula of final grade

1 – Written group work, with 30% weighing in the final classification

2 – Oral presentation of the group work, in the classroom, with 10% weighing in the final classification

3 - Individual essay, delivered at the end of the semester, with a weighing of 40% in the final classification

4 – Active participation in lessons, with 20% weighing in the final classification

The work themes (both group and individual) are negotiated between the teacher and students, from the course's content.
