Master in Psychology Themes

General information

Official Code: 6253
Acronym: MTP
Description: The Master's Degree in Psychology Themes (MTP) offered by FPCEUP is aimed at professionals from various fields, equipping them with in-depth knowledge to Psychology themes which will enrich their practice and professional performance. Some of these themes are: Neurocognition and Language; Psychology of Deviant Behaviour and Justice; Child Development and Education Psychology: Child Protection and Rights; and Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Mental Health. This cycle of studies does not enable the exercise of the profession as a psychologist and does not give access to the Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses (OPP).

Courses Units

Multidisciplinary Approach to Child Protection and Rights

MTP09 - ECTS The objectives of this CU are:
1. Give the students a multidisciplinary framework that integrates the different subjects related to the protection and promotion of children's rights;
2. Approach the research and theoretical production of different subjects - History, Sociology, Law, Psychology, Education, Health, Social Intervention, Politics, and Media - concerning the protection and promotion of the children's rights;
3. Analyse from an interdisciplinary point of view the relationships between the different subjects involved in the field of Child Protection;
4. Reflect on the social role of the different subjects involved in protecting and promoting children's rights.
5. Reflect on the ethics requirements  of research and intervention in the field of Child Protection

Attitude and Social Representations

POST06 - ECTS

To present the main theories that were developed on attitudes, social norms and social representations 

 

Family and Development

MTP10 - ECTS

This course aims to contribute to the scientific training of practitioners in the family and parenting domain, enabling them to contact with theoretical perspectives and empirical studies. In a more specific way it is intended to sensitize students to:

  1. The family's role in determining children’s development and adjustment
  2. The complexity of parent-child interactions and their impact on children’s development and adjustment
  3. Evidence-based interventions.

Interventio in the Promotion and Protection of Children and Youth

PEDH13 - ECTS The objectives of this UC are to develop knowledge about intervention to promote and protect young people when failure to comply with their rights leaves them in danger or strongly threatened. The aim is to systematize the levels and forms of action and highlight various programs, from the intervention of citizen volunteers in NGOs to the highly specialized intervention of professionals. The aim is to analyze, debate and develop skills in the field of interventions with children at risk and in danger, their families, and all those who can contribute to promoting practices that respect the best interests of the child.

Introduction to Suicidology

MTP23 - ECTS
- To identify the different concepts related to the different concepts related to suicidality, recognizing conceptual aspects, such as the concepts and limits in suicidology.
- To identify and understand the bases of different interpretative models of suicide
- To understand the specificities of prevention in this field
- To understand the general overview of research in suicidology (broad areas and specific methods)
- To understand the ethical challenges that arise in suicidology and develop reflections and practical recommendations within the scope of their fields of activity
- To identify the specificities and risk/protection factors of suicide and suicidal ideation among rescue workers who act in critical incidents and disasters

Methodology and Epistemology of Research in Psychology I

MTP01 - ECTS

Provide students with the fundamental knowledge of research methods used in psychology that will help them develop skills in critically evaluating research studies as well as provide the tools needed to design one’s own study

 

It corresponds to a first step of student training intended to familiarize students with the scientific research methods in Psychology, through the reflection and illustration of studies. It is also an objective to develop the ability to identify and critically evaluate the research methods used in published papers.

Health Psychology

PCS02 - ECTS

The main objective of the Health Psychology course is to introduce the principles and fundamentals of Health Psychology and empower students to develop assessment and intervention skills at both the primary prevention and health promotion levels, as well as at the secondary and tertiary prevention levels (i.e., physical conditions). Furthermore, it aims to contribute to critical reflection and ethical awareness in professional practice based on the specificities of Health Psychology.

Psychology of Deviant Behaviour

PJD02 - ECTS

To develop a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of the so-called deviant behaviours, covering theories in areas such as violence, criminality and juvenile delinquency, sex work and drug use.

Social Psychology of Groups

POST02 - ECTS

Students are expected to understand and critically analyse the main phenomena studied in Social Psychology, based on the theoretical frameworks developed to explain intra- and intergroup processes and their underlying factors.

Furthermore, students are expected to develop research and intervention skills in group contexts, particularly in situations involving diversity, inequality, social exclusion and intergroup conflict, fostering social responsibility, critical thinking, and a commitment to a more just, inclusive and sustainable society.

Additionally, students should acquire the ability to design and implement an experimental study on intra- and intergroup relations.

Seminar I

MTP02 - ECTS The general goal of the various MTP Seminars is to deepen the knowledge and skills that allow proficient and critical use of research in the field of Psychology and to plan the development of individual original research, empirical or theoretical, in a specific field of Psychology.
In this course, students will become familiar with and learn to identify the most relevant textbooks, reviews, papers and journals for their research topics. The students will also learn how to critically assess research papers and to point out research gaps that can be operationalized into feasible research questions. Especially, in a specific field of Psychology, the goals are to understand:
1- How to review scientific literature
2- How to review the literature critically
3- How to systematize relevant information about theoretical and methodological frameworks
4- How to frame a research question

Out-of-home Care and Adoption

MTP12 - ECTS

This CU aims to prepare students for intervention in out-of-home care and adoption.

Students should be able to:

  1. Understand the law for the protection of children and youth in danger, and specially the measures for placement out of  family (foster and residential care) and adoption;
  1. Understand the impact of historical and cultural factors on the protection system and acknowledge the ethical guidelines for intervention in the area; 
  1. Be familiar with the main theoretical models and the results of recent empirical research, both national and international, about family foster and residential care and adoption;
  1. Identify indicators of quality of child care both in institutional and family contexts;
  1. Acknowledge positive evidence based practices with children and youngsters in care
  1. Intervene in the different moments of the adoption process, from the evaluation of competences and adoptive parenting preparation of prospective adopters to the attendance and specialized intervention after child placement and post-adoption.
  1. Understand the specificities of the developmental process and the typical life story of the adoptable children, identify the children’s needs and characteristics and to intervene in the adoption process, from the preparation for adoption to the placement within the family in relation to the specific needs which may arise  in the adoptee’s developmental process.   

Maltreated children: Intervention and Research

MTP13 - ECTS The goals of this UC are:
1. To add knowledge in the domain of study;
2. To study the theoritical models in the domain;
3. To differetiate the diverse types of maltreatment;
4. To analyse rearch and papers in the domain;
5. To contact with assement strategies of the phenomeno.
6. To have a overview of intervention models in the domain.

Catastrophe and Emotional Aid

PCS07 - ECTS
Using descriptive methodology and practical exercises, this curricular unit aims to present to the students the different concepts and models of action in emotional/psychological aid, as well as their specificities and contexts of application in situations of crisis or catastrophe.

Parenting Interventions

PEDH12 - ECTS

This course aims to increase knowledge and skill of coming practitioners in the area of parenting intervention.

Methodology and Epistemology of Research in Psychology II

MTP03 - ECTS

Following “Metodologia e Epistemologia da Investigação em Psicologia I”, the goals are to apply and understand research methods in the context of students’ own research project, helping them to develop skills in critically evaluating research studies and providing the tools needed to design one’s own study.

 

 

 

Social Influence Processes

POST07 - ECTS

To present the main theories and different perspectives on persuasion and social influence. To discuss the different strategies of persuasion and social influence likely to lead to a change in attitudes and behaviors in various contexts, namely advertising, marketing, communication campaigns or political campaigns.

 

Mental Health, Stress and Emotions

RPSM01 - ECTS
This curricular unit aims:
- To define emotion and to refer the relationship between emotions, stress and mental health.
- To present the different theories of emotions, and to think about specificities and limitations of empirical study of emotions and stress.
- To distinguish the concepts of stress, post-traumatic stress and burnout/occupational stress, their symptoms, causes and consequences.
- To think critically about the influence of emotional states and stress in professional performance, especially rescuers’ performance.

Seminar II

MTP04 - ECTS
The general goal of the various MTP Seminars is to deepen the knowledge and skills that allow proficient and critical use of research in the field of Psychology and related fields, and to plan the development of individual original research, empirical or theoretical, in a specific field (thematic areas).
Seminars I and II also aim to enhance and diversify the training of students.
The Seminar II aims to understand:
1- How to critically analyze existing research, reflecting on the theoretical, practical, and ethical implications
2- How to select appropriate methods in the field of study
3- How to develop a research design adequate to the research questions, including methods of data collection (to identify and analyze sources of information such as surveys and interviews, and procedures) and data analysis.

Emerging Themes in Organizational, Social and Work Psychology

POST04 - ECTS This curricular unit intends to provide students with conceptual and operational instruments related to the different research types and objects in the fields of psychology of organizations, social psychology and work psychology, as well as in their interfaces, starting from previous knowledge within these theoretical areas.

Special Issues in Social Psychology

POST05 - ECTS

To analyse psychological, social and cultural processes associated with social phenomena such as prejudice, discrimination, power, social conflict and extremism, in light of current research in Social Psychology.

Students are expected to develop a critical understanding of these phenomena, reflecting on their impact on social cohesion and respect for human rights, as well as on psychosocial intervention strategies that promote inclusion, social responsibility and democratic values, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Dissertation

MTP07 - ECTS

This course aims to to develop an individual original, empirical or theoretical research project, involving field and/or theoretical work, in a in a specific domain of Psychology, more specifically:
1- How to develop a guided independent research on a specific Psychology topic
2- How to develop a written dissertation of the research developed

Methodology and Epistemology of Research in Psychology III

MTP08 - ECTS

 

Following the curricular units “Metodologia e Epistemologia da Investigação em Psicologia” I e II, this curricular unit intends to support an in-depth and systematic knowledge of the methods of investigation in Psychology, its operationalization and application in the concrete scope of the research work of each students, in order to contribute to the development of relevant and original scientific research work.

 

Research Seminar

MTP05 - ECTS
The general goal of the various MTP Seminars is to deepen the knowledge and skills that allow a proficient and critical use of research in the field of Psychology and related fields, and to plan the development of an individual original research, empirical or theoretical, in a specific field of Psychology.
  This course aims to develop the capability to interpret, evaluate and present the findings of the individual research project, specifically to know:
1- How to interpret accurately the research data
2- How to contemplate the ethical standards of research
3- How to evaluate the work developed
4- How to clearly present and clearly discuss the conclusions of the research project, as well the knowledge and arguments that support them

Supervision Seminar

MTP06 - ECTS
The general goal of the various MTP Seminars is to deepen the knowledge and skills that allow a proficient and critical use of research in the field of Psychology and related fields, to plan the development of an individual original research, empirical or theoretical, in a specific field of Psychology.
 
This course specifically aims to follow up, manage and monitor the implementation of the individual research project, more specifically:
1- To guide the use of adequate methods of data collection in a specific field of research (thematic area)
2- To guide the use of adequate methods of data analysis in a specific field of research (thematic area)
