Objectives

A cross-cultural perspective can contribute to enriching our understanding of classic and current research of the most important areas of Psychology. Cultural diversity is indeed one of the most important topics that faces nowadays the psychology. Our world has become increasingly diverse in school, at work, at Church, at leisure, at home, on the street. The diversity brings a challenge to each of us in our daily lives. It is intended with this curricular unit to see the question of human diversity in the study of Psychology.

Learning outcomes and competences


  • To own knowledge and comprehension to regarding cross-cultural relations;

  • To apply the knowledge and the ability to understanding the Portuguese context;

  • Verify ability to cross-cultural problem solving;

  • To encourage cross-cultural communication skills;

  • To value diversity and multiculturalism.

The themes to be addressed turn around eight chapters:

 

  1. Cross-cultural psychology in perspective
  2. Methodology of cross-cultural research
  3. Culture, self and personality
  4. Culture and basic psychological processes in cultural context: perception, cognition and emotion
  5. Culture and gender
  6. Culture and social behavior
  7. Culture and social issues
  8. Intercultural Contact

Teaching methods and learning activities

In class will be presented summaries, demos, videos, applications, group activities. However the more important thing is that students participate actively in the learning process. Student activities allowing the acquisition of these skills: reading; critical reflection; laboratory and field studies; case studies, discussions.

Eligibility for exams

The frequency of lessons is mandatory.

Calculation formula of final grade

-Realization of a work (50% of the grade);

-Testing (50% of the grade).

 

The final grade will be expressed on a scale of 0-20.

 

Grade less than 8 at work or in the test matches the disapproval.

Classification improvement

The improvement will be possible only once until the time of appeal of the  year the UC is achieved and only to the test component with the weighting of 50%.
