Objectives

Develop the research design for the Master dissertation drafted in the context of the Seminar I, namely:

- promote the search, critical analysis and systematization of the relevant information on theoretical and methodological frameworks according to the research object
- promote the elaboration of a research design, with the methodologies of data gathering and processing that are appropriate for the objective of the study

- develop the skills to rigorously analyze and discuss the results of the study, being conscious of its potentialities and limits.

- improve the skills in bibliographical research and scientific writing.

Learning outcomes and competences

With this curricular unit it is expected that students develop knowledge and competencies that will allow them:

- To develop a theoretical framework anchored in a wide and profound knowledge of the scientific literature concerning the research field and object;
- To justify methodological options, in articulation with epistemological and theoretical framework
- To operationalise research methods and techniques

The contents of the program are set in conformity with the topic chosen by the students for their project of the dissertation, and include:

- improving their knowledge about the theoretical and methodological frameworks of the research in a specific domain of Social and Human Sciences

- making a systematic bibliographical review on the object to be studied

- improve the research design presented in the first draft

- prepare the instruments of data gathering

Teaching methods and learning activities

Contact activities with the students:

- tutorial orientation

- presentation of works by the students

- formative and summative evaluation of the learning process

 

Autonomous work by the students:

- reading and analysis of texts

- research work

- review of the literature

- elaboration of a final report contributing to the evaluation

 

The evaluation is distributed throughout the semester and the students have to present the results of their various activities. It still includes the writing of an individual report that shows the progress that was achieved in the development of the project of dissertation.

Eligibility for exams

The assessment model implies that students attend the course in accordance with what is defined in the evaluation regime of the faculty degrees, with the exceptions presented in the assessment regime, point 4 of article 9º

Calculation formula of final grade

Participation (concerning the presentation and discussion of the research ongoing process) and attendance to the scheduled sessions (35%)
Individual assignment about key issues of the methodology and theoretical framework of the ongoing research (maximum 25 pgs) (65%)

Students that by law have the right to special conditions of assessment and attendance will be asked to demonstrate the knowledge and competencies required in this UC through special assignments, that should be defined and contractualized with the professors in the first two weeks of the semester

Classification improvement

The students may improve their grade through the reformulation of the written individual assignment and its discussion
