1. To be able to recognize the neuropsychological approach to the study of mind-brain and human behavior, and to identify its main characteristics. 2. To be familiar with selected neuropsychological syndromes, and be able to interpret them through cognitive analysis and behavioral observation. 3. To be knowledgeable about the consequences of brain lesion at the individual level and how it impacts on family and social networks. 4. To be able to interpret, analyze, and critically review specialized literature (scientific articles) in the domain of neuropsychology. 5. To be able to make the link between acquired knowledge and the professional practice of neuropsychology.

Conceptual and historical foundations of neuropsychology. Methods and techniques of experimental and clinical research in neuropsychology. Etiology of brain lesions across the life-span. The cerebral lobes: functions and main syndromes. Cognitive functions and associated deficits: visuo-spatial processing, attention, memory, language, executive functions, consciousness; numerical cognition; emotion and affect. Developmental neuropsychology: from childhood to adulthood and aging. Neuropsychology and neuropsychiatry.
Weekly sessions consisting of lectures (50%) and seminars for presentation and discussion of reviews of scientific research articles of experimental research and neuropsychological case studies (50%). Tutorial sessions for the preparation of reviews. E-learning component at the University of Porto Moodle platform: http://moodle.up.pt/ (visitor’s access with password “ visitaNP “), where materials used in the course are available: handouts, recommended readings and useful links. Assessment is done through writing assignments, no final exam. Students are required to deliver two review papers (750 words each), and short essays on a simple question after the main weekly lecture (we call these Pensar Pós Seminário, PPS, Think Post Seminar; 250 words each). In order to be admitted to final grading, students are required to attend at least 75% of the weekly sessions. Final grading takes into account the reviews (35% + 35%), the PPS (20%) and the participation in the weekly sessions (10%).
