Cycles of Study/Courses
Objectives
To introduce students to the psychology of language and of cognitive processes linked to thought. Specifically, this course aims to familiarize students with fundamental notions of spoken and written language, problem-solving, and decision-making, as well as with experimental research on these topics.
Program
Language, communication and cognition.
Spoken language.
Speech production and perception. Spoken word recognition and sentence comprehension. Language acquisition. Biological basis of language.
Written language
Writing systems. Cognitive processes involved in reading. Learning how to read and write.
Problem-solving
Gestalt and AI approaches. General problem solving methods. Domain-specific knowledge and the development of expertise.
Reasoning and decision-making
Thinking, reasoning and intuition. Choice between alternatives. Risky decision making. Heuristics and biases.
