Abstract (EN):
This paper aims to map the first generation of women completing doctorates in Portugal and to understand better the complex process that led to the late and distinctive emergence of women in academic economics in that country. We concluded that this process reflected issues that are specific to the economics profession, but also broader trends in Portuguese higher education and even in Portuguese society at large. Our study also allowed to document trends in research topics and to map differences by gender and over time regarding fields of specialization.
