Abstract (EN): Nowadays, there is an absolute need to supply electric energy, with no faults, to a large number of critical customers. In this context, the concept and the measurement of the power quality is the important issue. The paper discusses the main causes of a poor power quality and centres its contents in the goals that can be achieved by an active power filter as a means of power quality improvement. Different topologies of active filters are discussed along with its control methods. Also, the implemented compensation strategies with its trade offs are considered. Under the power quality issue, the performance measurement of active filters should consider different qualitative and quantitative indexes. The quantitative ones are the most important since they directly affect the power quality index.
