MD1101 - ECTS Anatomy teaching/learning is essential in every medical course. In the freshman year, student’s observation and morphological description capabilities are more favorable for the learning of these subjects.
In this sense, so that the characteristics of the normal functioning of the body can be understood and that the deviations of normality can be interpreted, it is essential the early acquisition of anatomical knowledge. Similarly, the language has specific medical terminology that is based on an anatomy nomenclature, allowing all who are dedicated to this area, to understand and to be understood.
In this Dental Medicine Master Degree, the faculty of Anatomy discipline believes that it should be taught on a topographic way so that the students acquire the knowledge necessary for their clinical life.

Discipline aims:

- Provide the acquisition of morpho-functional knowledge of the various devices and systems, so that each student gets the general concept of the unity of these components to later examine the morphological and functional integration of the human body.

- Provide the morpho-functional knowledge of the head and neck preparing the student for clinical disciplines.

MD1102 - ECTS The purpose of this course is to provide the student with a solid knowleadge about the cell molecular biology and organization.

MD1103 - ECTS - Aquisition of knowledge about the fundamentals of Biochemistry and its relationship with daily life phenomenons.
- Skills of analysis, integration and discussion of aquired knowledge.
- Development of identification and interpretation skills of new situations related with aquired knowledge.
- Aquisition of laboratorial work skills.
- Understanding the relevance of Biochemistry experimental methods as a lerning basis and its aplication in Medical Sciences.

MD1104 - ECTS The transmission of the concepts and the principles that preside over to the scientific spirit is the first one of the priorities, the one that will follow the motivation for the scientific production. For such, the discipline must to enable the learning about: the bibliographical research (methodologies and sources), the implementation of inquiry drawings (statistical integration of purposes and methods), the interpretation of results on the basis of the mathematical calculation and the spreading of the same ones. Finally, to stimulate the multidiscipline scientific work and in the attainment of abilities of bigger transversality.

MD1106 - ECTS Our first aim is to provide first-year students with the basic skills necessary to deal with the literature they will be obliged to read in English as part of their course. As the skills in language learning cannot be entirely separated, the course will also require some speaking, listening and writing on the part of the students. Our second aim is to provide students with an introduction to Academic Writing (See below).

MD1107 - ECTS A disciplina de Legislação Profissional tem como principal objectivo a aprendizagem e obtenção de conhecimentos sobre o enquadramento profissional da Medicina Dentária no Sistema Nacional de Saúde, e é destinada aos alunos do primeiro ano da licenciatura em Medicina Dentária.
Os alunos deverão desenvolver conhecimentos, competências e capacidades para compreenderem as normas e legislação que regulamentam o exercício profissional da Medicina Dentária, assim como o modelo organizativo do Sistema Nacional de Saúde português e a respectiva integração da Medicina Dentária neste sistema. Além disso, deverão incorporar no seu desenvolvimento, uma visão prospectiva, crítica, estratégica e de longo prazo das entidades e organizações que tutelam o exercício profissional da Medicina Dentária, no contexto da evolução do Sistema Nacional de Saúde.

MD1201 - ECTS O ensino/aprendizagem da Anatomia é um suporte fundamental para qualquer curso da área médica, sendo essencialmente no início da licenciatura que o desenvolvimento das capacidades de observação e descrição morfológicas encontra terreno mais favorável.
Neste sentido, para que as características do funcionamento normal do organismo possam ser compreendidas e para que os desvios da normalidade possam ser interpretados, é indispensável a aquisição precoce de conhecimentos anatómicos. De igual modo, a linguagem médica tem particularidades terminológicas que têm por base uma nomenclatura anatómica, permitindo a todos os que se dedicam a esta área, compreender e serem compreendidos.
No curso de Medicina Dentária entende o corpo docente da disciplina de Anatomia, que a mesma seja leccionada de forma topográfica, de modo a que os alunos adquiram os conhecimentos necessários para a sua vida profissional.

Esta disciplina tem por objectivos:
-Proporcionar a aquisição de conhecimentos morfo-funcionais dos diferentes aparelhos e sistemas, de modo a que cada aluno obtenha a noção geral da unidade desses componentes para, mais tarde, analisar a integração morfológica e funcional do corpo humano.
-Aprofundar os conhecimentos morfo-funcionais das várias regiões do corpo humano preparando o aluno para as disciplinas profissionalizantes.

MD1206 - ECTS This subject, Introduction to Dentistry and Clinics, aims to position the student concerning the most important aspects of the professional practice, without forgeting to provide him with a historical prespective of the evolution of dentistry from antiquity to the present days.
It is also intended to help the student with his integration in the clinical environment of the Faculty providing him an easier adaptation into his own working environment in the future.

MD1207 - ECTS A disciplina terá como principais objectivos transmitir aos alunos, conhecimentos sobre a importância da comunicação interpessoal na sociedade actual e na profissão médico-dentária, bem como promover a aprendizagem da melhor forma de implementar a excelência na comunicação sócio-profissional, no âmbito científico e clínico. No decorrer da disciplina, os alunos terão de apresentar um trabalho, de âmbito comunicacional, desenvolvendo-se assim na arte de comunicação em público.

MD2301 - ECTS A disciplina de Anatomia e Histologia Dentária tem como principal objectivo a aprendizagem e obtenção de conhecimentos sobre a morfologia dos dentes, a ultra-estrutura dos tecidos da cavidade oral e do seu desenvolvimento embriológico, sendo destinada aos alunos do segundo ano da licenciatura em Medicina Dentária.
Os alunos deverão desenvolver conhecimentos, competências e capacidades para compreenderem e identificarem as características morfológicas dos dentes permanentes e decíduos, e a nível ultra-estrutural, das células e dos tecidos que constituem a cavidade oral, bem como as diversas etapas do seu desenvolvimento embriológico. Além disso, deverão incorporar no seu desenvolvimento, uma visão crítica, da importância destes conhecimentos na etiologia de patologias e as suas manifestações clínicas.

MD2302 - ECTS A Fisiologia Médica explora a função orgânica nos diferentes graus de organização, do nível subcelular ao organismo. O ensino de Fisiologia I no mestrado integrado em Medicina Dentária tem como objectivos gerais:

• Fornecer aos alunos de Medicina Dentária os conhecimentos básicos para uma compreensão dos mecanismos de funcionamento dos sistemas orgânicos e sua visão integrada;

• Fomentar a discussão de efeitos de diferentes perturbações do equilíbrio orgânico (p.e. patologias) através de programas de simulação ou discussão de casos problema;

MD2303 - ECTS To understand the role of genetics in Medicine: from the gene to the disease and the patient.

Provide the future dentist with diagnostic and disease prevention skills to allow the identification of susceptible individuals to genetic disease. To understand key factors that influence genetic traits and hereditary patterns.

In the medical genetics course, we use active learning and parallel research activities that will help the students to develop an interest in genetics and critical though in the search for knowledge.

MD2304 - ECTS Histology and Embriology I subject has as its main goal to provide knowledge about human tissues utra-structure and also, about embriologic development of human tissues and organs. It is a subject to be taught to second year students.
Students should develop skills that allow them to understand cells ans tissues' morphologic ultra-structural characteristics and embriological development.
A critical view should also be developed to recognize the importance of identifying ultra-structure or embriologic development changes in some pathologies and their clinical presentations.

MD2305 - ECTS Aims:
To make the student competent in the accomplishment of imaging techniques and other techniques related to that issue, its interpretation and suiting to the diagnosis and treatment methods on Dental Medicine. Knowledge of radiation, radiation safety and protection on dental practice, imaging formation on Dental Medicine.
Knowledge of the digital intra and extraoral radiographic examinations. To became aware of the indications and counterindications of those studies.
To get some notions of semeiology. To interpret simple images, of phathology, changes and treatments put into practice on Dental Medicine.
To make the student able to do the study of these issues in a autonomous and continuous way.

MD2308 - ECTS Psychology I and II
Background
Some clinical practitioners and philosophers, today believe that Cartesian line of thought (between body and mind) is outdated. Some anecdotal evidence has been raised concerning the lack of effective treatment for pathologies such as some oro-facial diseases (for instances: chronic temporomandibular disorders or Bruxism) and chronic pain, cancer etc, and that perhaps the cure should not only be centred on the body but also the mind. Medical psychology (related to Clinical Health Psychology, Psychosomatic Medicine, and Behavioral Medicine') is a branch of clinical psychology where clinicians have trained in the biological aspects of mental illness in relation to physical illness, and are usually qualified to prescribe medication; this last aspect varies from country to country. It adopts the biopsychosocial approach to medicine, which revolves around the idea that both the body and mind are indivisible, and that disease and illness are not identical. Continuing with this line of thought, all diseases whether of the mind or of the physical body must be treated as if they have both been affected. The intent of Medical Psychology is to apply knowledge from all branches of social, psychological, and biological medicine in the prevention, assessment, and treatment of all forms of physical illness and the adaptation to illness; specific behavioral, psychotherapeutic, and pharmaceutical methods are used to help the person respond to illness and prevent further illness through matching coping and management skills to the person’s abilities, character, and personality style.

· Estudo do comportamento humano perturbado. Compreender a interacção biológico-psicológico na dinâmica das doenças humanas, numa perspectiva eclética. Análise da semiologia do enfermo psíquico.
· Conhecer os diferentes princípios gerais, métodos e procedimentos da Psicologia Médica.
· Conhecer alguns dos domínios da Psicopatologia. Apreender a importância da região orofacial na patoplastia de determinadas doenças mentais.
· Destacar os quadros clínicos especificamente associados ao exercício da Medicina Dentária. Saber distinguir entre reacção adaptativa ou perturbação psicológica e doença psiquiátrica.
· Regras de nomenclatura e classificações internacionais.
· Conhecer os métodos e as técnicas complementares de diagnóstico para a compreensão das doenças mentais.
