Objectives

 

The average life expectancy has increased significantly in Portugal and good pharmacy practice run for the elderly have become a paradigm of community health quality. In a developed society dictates, aging well is an inalienable human right.

The goal of this course is to provide students with basic concepts of physiology and the main diseases associated with aging, as well as the correct way to monitor the elderly. The student should be able to integrate in his future professional activity the knowledge acquired in this course.

 

Learning outcomes and competences

 

At the end of the course the student should meet the following competencies:

1) Recognize the physiological changes associated with aging as well as some of the most frequent and /or relevant pathologies in the elderly;

2) Learn to take an active role in the monitoring of users in this age group;

3) Be aware of the basic foundations of health promotion in Geriatrics, such as the humanization of care and conducting screenings, as well as the prevention of therapeutic abandonment, social isolation, physical inactivity and accidents;

4) Know how to promote good aging, to which the elderly should be entitled.

THEORETICAL COMPONENT:

1. Introduction: concepts associated with aging.

2. Physiological changes associated with the aging process.

3. Theories of aging.

4. Adequate and potentially inappropriate drugs in the elderly: a perspective of Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

5. Frequent pathologies in the elderly.

5.1. Hematological diseases. Anemia in the elderly. Thrombosis. The patient under hypocoagulation.

5.2. Kidney disease. Electrolyte disturbances. Acute and chronic kidney disease. The patient under hemodialysis therapy.

5.3. Urinary incontinence. Types of incontinence. Impact and complications.

5.4. Oncologic diseases. Aging and tumor development. Breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer. Ostomy patient.

5.5. Neuropsychiatric pathology. Aging and cognitive impairment. Anxiety disorders. Mood disorders. Neurodegenerative diseases.

5.6. Aging and atherosclerosis. Control of cardiovascular risk in the elderly. Hypertension; hypercholesterolemia; diabetes.

5.7. Osteoporosis. Bone fractures. Consequences on the quality of life of the elderly.

5.8.  Intrinsic and extrinsic skin aging: pathophysiological mechanisms, histological and clinical modifications. Most common skin disorders in the elderly. Counseling for the prevention and minimization of skin aging.

6. Nutrition and aging.

7. Prevention of diseases and accidents in the elderly.

8. The pharmacist's role in providing and humanizing health care.

 

PRACTICE COMPONENT:

1.Development of skills appropriate to the user/patient-pharmacist relationship.

2."Role-playing" with paper exchange with the hypothetical user in typified situations: communicating with the elderly, advise and deal with emotional changes.

3.Discussion of scientific papers related to theoretical component of the course.

4.Presentation of work done by students on specific topics related to the matter, that will be discussed together and evaluated throughout the year.

Teaching methods and learning activities

 

Lectures (2 hours /week), the responsibility of the Regent. Master classes.

A weekly practice session of 2 hours of interactive type.

In addition to the established schedules for classes, the teacher will be available to meet students at any time previously agreed.

Eligibility for exams

 

Attendance at lectures and practical classes is mandatory. 
The student fulfills the attendance if the number of the absences from lectures and practical classes is less than 1/4 of the planned classes.

 

Calculation formula of final grade

 

COMPONENTS OF EVALUATION:

The distributed component is evaluated on the basis of work submitted by students in practical classes during the school year, reaching a maximum of 4 values.
The final exam is worth 16 values and consists of a written test that focuses on all matters effectively taught in classes (theoretical and practical) during the semester.

Approval in the course will depend on obtaining the minimum classification of 9.50 values in each of the components.


CALCULATION OF FINAL RATING:

Classification of distributed component (0-4 values) + classification of final exam (0-16 values).

 

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

 

According to the specifications of the Assessment Regulations in the current school year.

 

Classification improvement

 

Students may apply for improving the classification obtained in the written final exam according to the specifications of the Assessment Regulations in the current school year.

 

Observations

 

The program of the course has been prepared on the assumption that students have knowledge of Anatomy and Histology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Hematology and Pharmacology.
