Summary:

The objective of the current Project is to allow the entry of cork stoppers in the market of white spirit drinks. A coating for cork will be developed to act as a barrier to the undesired migration of polyphenolic compounds (colouring matter) from the cork stopper to the spirit drink. A pilot installation will also be projected and built for the coating of the cork stoppers. This project will allow the creation of a new range of products in the cork stopper sector. Its success will enable the facing up to a competitor which established itself widely in the cork stopper market -the alternative wine seals- and thus promote the conquest of new international markets.
This project has also as an objective and a consequence the development of a solid Innovation partnership in the cork stopper area and the use and development of new polymers towards its valorisation. The strengthening of the partnership between Amorim&Irmãos and the Network for Competence in Polymers (R&D network) will set the course for the development of new and innovative products in such a critical area to Portugal as the cork business is.
