Maria Emília da Silva Pereira de Sousa is researcher at the Research Center CIIMAR and Associate Professor with Habilitation of Organic and Medicinal Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto.

Currently, she is the Director of the Master in Pharmaceutical Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto and Titular Member (TM) of the IUPAC Chemistry and Human Health Division for 2024-2025. She is Editor of the Jounal Bioorganic Chemistry (Elsevier) and Associate Editor of Pharmaceuticals (MDPI) and Member of the editorial board of several journals in the area of Medicinal Chemistry.

Her area of scientific activity is centered on Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry in particular, in the structure-based design and synthesis of potential drug candidates based on plant and marine natural product leads such as xanthones, fiscalins and other O- and N- heterocycles, in studies of structure-activity relationships and preclinical/preformulation studies.

She is the author of 4 Portuguese and 4 International Patent Applications in the area of drug discovery and development of bioactive compounds.
