What is the purpose of the PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences?

The PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (DCF) is a programme accredited by A3ES, aimed at training highly qualified professionals with competencies in the implementation, rational use, and management of innovative products and services with high added value. Graduates are prepared to deliver direct societal benefits across healthcare, education, research, and development.

What You Need to Complete to Obtain the PhD

Programme Structure

The PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (DCF) lasts eight semesters. The first and second semesters include a seminar (22 ECTS) and two Research Methodologies course units (14 ECTS), which emphasise active integration into the scientific and academic community, as well as the development of research, scientific writing, communication skills, and specialised technical competencies.

From the second semester of the first year onwards, and throughout the remaining semesters (204 ECTS), students undertake experimental work leading to the preparation of a doctoral thesis, supported by individual research. This research is typically carried out within leading research and development (R&D) units at the University of Porto or interuniversity centres, including:

  • I3S – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health
  • CIIMAR – Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research
  • LAQV/REQUIMTE – Associate Laboratory for Green Chemistry
  • UCIBIO/FFUP – Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit
  • CIBIO-InBIO – Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources


Eligibility
Candidates eligible to apply include:

  • Holders of a Master’s degree or equivalent;
  • Holders of a Bachelor’s degree with a relevant academic or scientific curriculum demonstrating the capacity to undertake third-cycle studies;
  • Individuals with a relevant academic or scientific curriculum demonstrating the capacity to undertake third-cycle studies.
