The course "From Organic Chemistry to Drugs: theory and laboratory practice", organized by the Laboratory of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (LQOF) of FFUP, supported by the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), will be taught by Professors / Researchers of the LQOF.

The main topics covered in this Course are:
- General reactivity of organic compounds;
- Synthesis of drugs;
- Pharmacopeia analysis;
- “ChemBioOffice” software for teaching and learning Organic Chemistry and Medicinal Pharmaceutical Chemistry;
- Pharmaceutical Medicinal Chemistry in discovery, design and development of drugs
- Molecular Recognition in drug mechanism of action;
- Factors affecting the activity of drugs;
- Drug discovery and development.

"Case studies" involving the referred topics will also be presented and discussed with the participants.
It is intended that participants can discuss current topics of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry with professors and researchers of the LQOF. The course also aims to develop skills such as deductive reasoning, rigor, interpretation of experimental data and critical observation.

The course will be taught in Portuguese or in English, if necessary.

COURSE TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is for secondary school and university teachers (Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Biology) and, researchers, technicians and students (Integrated Masters; 2nd and 3rd Cycles) in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medicine, Veterinary, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Pharmacology and Biotechnology.

Candidates must have training or enrollment in Higher Education or Polytechnic Education.
Candidates will be ranked considering:
- professor of higher education or basic and secondary education in Life and Health Sciences areas: 40 points
- other professionals in Life and Health Sciences: 30 points
- professionals from other areas: 15 points
- 3rd cycle students: 8 points
- 2nd cycle students: 3 points
- other interested candidates: 2 points

In the case of a tie, the professional experience in Life and Health Sciences will be considered, or the year of attendance at University or Polytechnic Education.

Participants who aim to present a poster communication must submit a Scientific Abstract (with title, authors, affiliation, abstract, references and acknowledgments), when applying to be evaluated by the organization.

REGISTRATIONS:

2nd and 3rd UP students (except FFUP): 100 ¤
FFUP students and FFUP staff: 75 ¤

School insurance (except for enrolled students at the UP/FFUP): 2

The number of participants will be limited to 24 participants.
The minimum number to function is 10 participants.

It is mandatory to attend at least 75% of classes. The evaluation will consist of reports on laboratory work (30%) and a written exam covering all subjects (70%). A positive evaluation leads to the attribution of the respective certificate of training (according to the U.Porto Table of Fees and Charges).

Students enrolled at UP should ensure that they have credits (ECTS) available for enrolment in the course (3 ECTS). The maximum limit for enrolment in an academic year at UP is 75 annual ECTS and 42 semester ECTS. Exceptionally, in cases of course completion, students may enrol a total of 81 annual and 48 semester ECTS, upon request and authorization from the Director and Pedagogical Council of the institution where they are enrolled.
