Objectives

The general objective of this curricular unit is for the student to get in touch with the various strategies/methodologies for planning and sustainably obtaining drugs through a Project-based learning model. The Student, having acquired a set of essential knowledge to follow the evolution that the process of discovering and obtaining drugs has undergone in the mandatory curricular units, in this curricular unit must develop a critical spirit to find the solution to a problem related to the theme and the capacity for adequate expression, as well as argumentation through the preparation of reports, presentation and discussion of a solution to a problem.

The existence of the course unit of Planning and Sustainable Procurement of Pharmaceuticals is justified by the need to complement the content of the course units of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, generalist by nature, with a set of essential knowledge to accompany the Pharmaceutical Industry in the evolution that has undergone of new drugs.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student should obtain:

 - a set of essential skills for monitoring the progress of drug discovery process

 - the overview of the process of drug development

 - critical thinking

 - develop the ability to communicate as well as argumentation through the presentation and discussion of reports and presentation of the resolution of a problem.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

It is assumed students have the basic knowledge provided by the subjects: Organic Chemistry I, Organic Chemistry II, Pharmaceutical Chemistry I, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Instrumental Analysis Methods.

Program

Application of tools in use to the discovery and sustainably design of new drugs in a project with a PBL modality:

- The resolution of problems that could be faced in planning and obtaining drugs

- The preparation and presentation by the students of a "problem" on planning a drug

Mandatory literature

Pinto Madalena M. M. 340; Manual de trabalhos laboratoriais de química orgânica e farmacêutica. ISBN: 978-972-757-750-7

Teaching methods and learning activities

Preparation, monitored by Professors, and presentation by Students of a project (problem-based learning) related to the discovery and/or sustainably obtaining of new drugs.

- In silico methods and literature search to predict/support proposed results.
The professors in charge will be available in the schedule previously announced at the beginning of the semester and by appointment.

Trabalho prático ou de projeto 50,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Apresentação/discussão de um trabalho científico 5,00
Elaboração de projeto 50,00
Estudo autónomo 10,00
Frequência das aulas 25,00
Trabalho escrito 10,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

  -Presence in classes is mandatory.

- Presentation and discussion of a problem/resolution is mandatory.

 - To obtain approval, students must obtain on the "problem-based learning" a final mark of 10 values out of 20.

- If the classification is less than 10, students may waive the continuous evaluation and perform final theoretical examination at the time of examination (appeal).

Calculation formula of final grade

- Reports and Presentation and discussion of a "problem-based learning": factor 100%.

Internship work/project

not applicable

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students that by law do not need to attend the practical classes, and do not have frequency in these classes must perform a final written exam in date according to the academic calendar
Students with assessments obtained in previous years may give up of the continuous assessment (must contact the Responsible UC) and perform new evaluation; otherwise,  must perform a final written exam in date according to the academic calendar

Classification improvement

Students will have to make a final examination on the methodologies used in the project.
