Understanding the behaviour of organic compounds concerning the relationship of chemical structure with the respective physical-chemistry and reactivity properties. Understanding the importance of the tri-dimensionality of organic structures.
Implementation of the rules concerning laboratory safety and good practices in the use of materials and equipment. Learning to apply the basic techniques of obtention, isolation, purification and purity control in samples of diverse origin.
It is intended that students acquire a clear vision of the potential and application of organic chemistry, as well as the reactivity and physicochemical properties of different groups of organic compounds. It is also encouraged the development of the skills of reflection and critique, teamwork and laboratory experiments planning, organization and interpretation of experimental data.
Study of organic compounds: alkanes, cyclic alkanes, haloalkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides and aromatic compounds: Structures, nomenclature, physical-chemical properties, synthesis and reactivity, mechanisms. Conformational analysis. Stereochemistry: chiral compounds, optical activity, separation of enantiomers; stereochemistry in chemical reactions.
Execution of laboratory tasks aimed at the basic operations for the separation, purification and control of purity of organic compounds.
Theoretical classes (3 hours/week): Powerpoint and “blackboard” presentations.
The subject-matters will be always linked with day to day life and pharmaceutical sciences and is intended to supply propedeutic bases for other subjects. The discussion on the theme and the resolution of related questions is encouraged at the end of each chapter.
laboratorial classes
Following discussion classes on the background of methods (1 week) and a laboratorial demonstration class (1 week), the laboratory work (2 hours / week) is carried out in groups of 2 to 3 students on a rotary basis and according to a chronogram.
The lecturers responsible are available for student consultation at the hours specified in the beginning of the semester and by prior, agreed appointment at any other time.

LABORATORY COMPONENT
- Will include the evaluation of students performance, and reports of laboratory work, delivered in the subsequent class to which the work was done. These aspects will contribute 10% to the overall mark of the course. In the laboratory component is also taken into account the marks obtained in a written test (1test – Part A) to be held during the first week of mid-term evaluation. This part of this test will contribute 15% to the overall score of the course.
- The laboratory component of the grade will have the total weighting factor of 25% to the overall score of the course.
THEORETICAL COMPONENT
- Will be evaluated using the two tests. The 1st test will be assessed syllabus for the lectures given so far (1st test – Part B), contributing this with 20% for the overall score of the course. In the 2nd frequency will be assessed the remaining syllabus concerning given lectures, contributing this with 55% for the overall score of the course. The theoretical component will have the total weighting factor of 75% to the overall score of the course.
- Students with final grades equal or superior to 9.5 will be approved; with final grades inferior to 9.5 will be reproved.
During the classes will be conducted two tests. In the first test will be assessed the theoretical aspects of the laboratory work (1st test – Part A) and the syllabus for the lectures given so far (1st test – Part B notebook). In the 2nd test will be assessed all matter in the theoretical program not evaluated in the 1st test.
The exams for the special regime students are carried out in accordance with that established in the applicable legislation for each specific situation.
For classification improvement the student has to perform an writen final exam. The laboratorial grade will be mantained. The final grade is attributed by the following manner: 75% from the written final exam, 25% from the laboratorial component.
A basic knowledge of General Chemistry and Physical-Chemistry is assumed.
