Objectives

Community and hospital pharmacists will deal more deeply with prevalent diseases in the community. Based on these pathologies, the trends and strategies for the discovery of new therapeutic targets and new drugs will be discussed. Starting from the disease and the therapeutic target, the mechanism of action at the molecular level and chemical-pharmaceutical pipeline from the leader to the drug and the drugs currently used in therapy and those that are under development will be presented. It is intended that the students will be able to interpret the structure-activity relationships, the metabolism, and the mechanisms of action at the molecular level for the different drug groups. Some experts in these areas will be invited to present some conferences. In this course, some therapeutic families that were not deeply discussed in previous classes of Pharmaceutical Chemistry will be also developed. In practical classes, using scientific articles and other bibliographic resources, students will deepen the themes related to the subjects taught in the lectures. It is intended that the student acquires the domain in the preparation of a monograph and its presentation as well as the oral discussion on the proposed topic. In order to stimulate the ability of oral and written expression, critical analysis and argument, the students prepare throughout the semester, papers and oral presentations that will be evaluated.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this course, students should have a broad and integrated understanding of the entire drug discovery circuit, its planning and development. The development of critical thinking, bibliographic search and autonomy is also fostered. At the end of the UC, students should be able to easily communicate their ideas, collaborate and work as a team and be able to solve problems using the scientific and investigational method.

Structures, therapeutical target, mechanisms of action at molecular level, structure-activity relationships, metabolism, and chemical-pharmaceutical developments of the following families of drugs: 1. Cardiovascular Agents 1.1. Antihypertensive agents: diuretics, calcium entry blockers, adrenergic blockers, vasodilators, ACE inhibitors, venotropic drugs 1.2. Lipid-lowering agents 2. Blood 2.1. Anticoagulants and antithrombotics 2.2. Anti-hemorrhagic 2.3 antianemics 3. Hormones and drugs used in endocrine diseases 3.1. Insulin and oral antidiabetics 3.2. Thyroid hormones and antithyroid drugs 4. Gastrointestinal 4.1. Antacids 4.2. Anti-ulcer, proton pump inhibitors, prostaglandins 4.3. Modifiers of gastrointestinal motility. 4.4. Biliary motility. II. Drugs used in: 1. Eating disorders: obesity, bulimia, anorexia 2. Sexual dysfunction 3. Disorders of hair growth: Alopecia 4. Smoking cessation

Teaching methods and learning activities

- Theoretical classes (2 hours/week): Presentations in “Power Point”; it is intended to transmit knowledge in an attractive and deductive manner. - A monograph will be elaborated and presented by the students in practical classes. The aim of this bibliographic research work is to get deeper in the issues related to the subjects taught in the theoretical classes, as well as to stimulate the capacity of oral and written expression, critical analysis and argumentation. - The lecturers responsible are available for students consultation on the times announced at the beginning of the semester or at a time previously arranged and agreed.

Eligibility for exams

a) During classes the students will be evaluated by the elaboration and presentation of a monograph. The performance of these is compulsory. b) Attendance to theoretical classes is not compulsory, except for those corresponding to the presentation of the oral communication described in a). c) The written final exam will include all matters discussed in theoretical classes. d) Students need to have at least 8.6 in the final written exam.

Calculation formula of final grade

- The final grade is attributed by the following manner: 50% from the elaboration and presentation of a monograph, 50% from the written theoretical exam. - Students with final grades equal or superior to 10 will be approved and with final grades inferior to 10 will be reproved.

Examinations or Special Assignments

- During practical classes the students will be evaluated by the elaboration and presentation of a monograph. The performance of this is compulsory.

Classification improvement

-For classification improvement the student only has to perform the written exam. The classification obtained for the monograph is maintained.
