MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences

ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017

The Mater Degree on Pharmaceutical Sciences of FFUP aims to prepare graduated students to work in activities traditionally related to the pharmaceutical profession, such as Community Pharmacy, Hospital Pharmacy, Industrial Pharmacy (development, fabrication, quality control, marketing and pharmaceutical legislation), wholesale dealer in medicines, Clinical Analyses and several other activities of analytical purposes (chemical analyses, hydrological analyses, bromatological analyses, microbiological analyses, toxicological analyses, etc.) teaching and investigation. Its aim is to train qualified professionals to work with exclusive competence and responsibility in the activities that belong to the content of the Acto Farmacêutico, Pharmaceutical Act ( Decreto-Lei nº 288/2001).

In order to train graduated students to work for these several professional possibilities, the Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences of FFUP offers the possibility to a larger training, a 5 years long study, in which a number of basic subjects are taught (in the first years) with specialized subjects (from the 3th year on), and a training period included in the Degree (in the 2nd semester of the 5th year),allowing students to better professional opportunities.

It’s important to emphasize that in Europe the Master Degree of Pharmaceutical Sciences has to follow some Communitarian rules and the Pharmaceutical Sciences Degree of FFUP tries to apply them by respecting the curricular content, this can be seen in the way the theoretical and practical classes are balanced, so that it is possible to maintain the university and professional essence of it.

As the Pharmaceutical Sciences Degree of FFUP aims to adapt itself to the fast evolution of scientific knowledge, it was decided that from the academic year of 2002/2003 on, the Plan of Studies would include a number of complementary disciplines, to be chosen by the students. This decision aimed to lecture the new scientific work into the curricula and also to enable the students to acquire an educational profile adequate to perform the professional activity.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences Master Degree of FFUP is organized by the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) system.

To those students that have completed the fist 180 ECTS (corresponding to the first 6 semesters) is attributed a degree in Basic Studies of Pharmaceutical Sciences. This Degree allows them to matriculate and attend several Master courses both in FFUP and in other teaching institutions.
