Financial Accounting and Reporting

According to the current positioning of this master (MEAE), the course unit of Accounting and Financial Reporting is essentially oriented towards students who have not yet had contact with the subject of Financial Accounting or who have had a basic or introductory contact. Thus, with this course unit, students should:
- Understand the framework of the accounting information system and its role in a company;
- Know the most relevant aspects of the conceptual structure and accounting modeling to support financial reporting;
- Know and understand the main financial statements, having the ability to assess the role of each in the scope of financial reporting, accountability, and its usefulness for each of the users of financial information;
- Understand the role of External Audit / Statutory Audit and its limitations with regard to Accounting and Financial Reporting.
Business Economics

The main objective of the course is to show how Economics is important for decision making in firms using a contactual approach of the theory of the firm.
Human Resource Management

Applied Quantitative Methods

This course main goal is to show how quantitative methods can be applied to the analysis of management and economic problems and to the decision making process that leads to the best solution available. In a more practical and close to date framework, this course can also assist students to better appreciate published scientific research, and conveys the basic training for helping them to prepare the empirical part of their dissertations.
Information Systems

The goal of this course is to provide students with a fundamental knowledge on information systems, including the components of technology, design and analysis of information, in order to make them capable of using them as a tool of promotion of the corporation strategy and objectives.
Management Accounting and Control

This course will explore recent discussions and advances in management accounting and control research and practice. Particular attention will be devoted to topics related with cost behaviour and management, and with decision making at an operational and strategic level.
Students will be encouraged to develop a critical approach about the course topics.
Corporate Finance

In this course we discuss some of the main financial decisions of a corporate manager. The course aims to enable to know the main problems facing the financial management and acquire skills, including the following areas: asset valuation, investment decision making funding decisions and measuring and managing the cost of capital.
Strategic Management

Leadership and Organizational Change

- to analyse leadership and organizational change as joint, unseparate processes of mutual implication;
- to analyse leadership and organizational themes as complex and disputed territories, in which very different discourses coexist, with diverse origins, interests and agendas, which frequently translate in reinforcing power assimetries in organizations;
- to analyse how different modes of thinking translate in distinctive conceptualizations of leadership and ways of conducting processes of change, and generate different organizational dynamics;
- to develop critical thinking in the analysis of organization, change and leadership phenomena

Economic Policies

This course aims to show how macroeconomic stabilization policies (namely monetary and fiscal policy) can affect the main economic variables.
Combining theoretical elements with reflection on concrete cases, the analysis encompasses the short-term effects, but also the long-term effects of policies that may occur via hysteresis mechanisms.
Global Economics and Markets

The learning objectives of this course are: to understand the functioning of the economy from a global perspective, and the way it is affected by the interactions between the different national economies; to understand how fundamental macroeconomic variables interact in the context of open economies; to understand how the international monetary system works and to become familiar with the proposals for its reform; to understand the impact of financial globalization, with its benefits and challenges; to understand the occurrence of global imbalances and global financial crises.
Amongst other topics, we will study the importance of the foreign exchange and the international capital markets and how they work, the gains from financial globalisation, crises, and global imbalances.
This course will integrate theory with empirical evidence, while also looking at particular case studies, including the most recent ones. This will help students in their application of the theory and in identifying the relevance of the subjects studied for the important questions of the global economy.
Ethics and Corporate Governance

The objective of the discipline is to develop the subject of Corporate Governance, an issue that has been gaining growing importance within Corporate Economics in general and Corporate Finance in particular, as well as to deal with the different aspects and imensions giving form to this new academic discipline.
Real world corporate governance cases will be studied and a systematic comparison will be made between the praxis of corporate governance and the concrete situations of corporate success and failure.
International Business Management

The aim of this course is for students to understand how organisations are currently operating in the international market and to make them aware of the need for those responsible for managing international business to develop the skills, attitudes and theoretical knowledge needed to be competitive in the international market.
The course programme therefore delves into strategic analysis based on business and market analysis.
In this sense, it emphasises the impact that changes in the international environment have on International Business Management. As a result, it will analyse changes in national culture, organisational culture, new collaboration and competition relationships, new forms of control and inter-functional coordination, and the new configuration of distribution channels.
Special attention will also be paid to developing the ability to anticipate and, in this sense, the vital importance of developing a Business Intelligence system.
