Summary:

Excessive salt intake is a growing concern in society and has had a serious impact on health, such as increased blood pressure and increased mortality and morbidity. Most of the salt consumed comes from the salt added during the industrial processing of food products and during cooking process. There is currently no equipment available on the market to quantify the amounts of salt used to make meals. These limitations motivated the development of this research project that aims to develop and demonstrate, in a real environment of use, the application of a portable and user friendly instrument that provides different amounts of salt recommended for the cooking of meals for adults and
children. This innovative instrument, which will be developed to scale for domestic and commercial application, will be tested in Portuguese families and canteen schools, and the impact on salt consumption will be analysed.
