Scientific Research


He currently focuses his research interests, both fundamental and applied empirically, around themes in the scientific area of Criminology and Economic Analysis of Law (LAW AND ECONOMICS): Law enforcement COSTS and, in particular, the costs related to crime, with its delimitation and estimation for Portugal; analysis of deviant behaviour specifically at the level of the effectiveness of DETERRENCE instruments; and studies on ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL CRIME.

Focus special attention on CRIMINAL NETWORKS ANALYSIS.

It has also integrated research teams dedicated to the themes of domestic violence and marital homicide.

The scientific work has resulted in oral presentations at various international and national congresses, with peer-reviewed scientific publications. It has developed referee (reviewer) activity in international and national scientific publications.

He is an integrated member of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Justice (CIJ) of the FDUP.

He is member of the  European Society of Criminology,  American Society of CriminologyEUROC (European WG on Organizational Crime) and of the Division of White Collar and Corporate Crime

Past scientific research activity

He began his academic career by developing his research activities in the specific area of Central Banks, specializing in monetary policy and dynamic models, seeking, on the basis of micro-economy and game theory, to understand the functioning of groups of decision-makers, namely monetary policy councils. He has also carried out research on central bank  laws and on the discussion of central bank independence and accountability.


Teaching responsibilities

Since 2007 he has been teaching at the FDUP's Degree in Criminology and, since 2010, also at the Masters in Criminology and Law of the same faculty, in the curricular units of Applied Statistics I and II, Investigation Methodologies, Organized Crime and Economic Crime, Political Economy, and Practicum in Legal-Economic Sciences, among others. He has oriented student research work leading to Master's and Doctoral degrees.

Between 1994 and 2010, he was a lecturer at the Universidade Portucalense in various undergraduate courses in Economics, Management and Law, divided into the areas of Introduction to Economics, International Economics, Economic Analysis of Law, Microeconomics, Game Theory, and Statistics. He has also lectured in the framework of the Erasmus teaching mobility programme (e.g. Economics at the University of Parma, Italy; Eotvos Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary).


Other professional and scientific responsibilities

In addition to teaching and research activities, he currently assumes management responsibilities, namely as a member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Law, as Director of the Masters in Criminology; and also as a member of the FDUP Cooperation Commission.

Between 2010 and 2014, he was a member of the Centenary Commission of the Degree in Criminology, supervisor of the Office of Evaluation and Knowledge, and Vice-coordinator of the Office of Exchanges and Mobility.

Between 2014 and 2016 he was a member of he Executive Board of the European Society of Criminology, as organizer of EUROCRIM2015.
