He oriented his research activity to the study of cell differentiation using electron microscopy and obtained a doctoral degree in Biology by the University of Porto in 1993. Presently, being retired, he is invited Associate professor at the Department of Biology, FCUP, and an integrated researcher at GreenUPorto.

José has maintained regular activity of theoretical and practical teaching and has been responsible for creating several undergraduate and master courses. He has participated in jury boards being principal opponent in numerous MSc and PhD examinations. José has been supervisor of MSc dissertations and PhD thesis. He has given numerous lectures in the biology area in various institutions.

He was member of the Scientific Border (2018-2022), Director of the Master in Cell and Molecular Biology (2011-2016), President of the Department of Botany - FCUP (2006-2009), member of the Scientific Committee - FCUP (2009, 2010), member of the Evaluation Coordinating Council - FCUP (2008 -2010), Director of the Master in Biology (2007-2010) and coordinator of the Master in Biology for Teaching (2002-2006).

José Pissarra began his scientific activity at the Electron Microscopy Center (UP), was researcher at the Center for Experimental Cytology – UPorto, then at the Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology (IBMC) and later at BioISI. He is currently an integrated researcher at GreenUPorto. He has been responsible and co-responsible for projects funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture, the University of Porto and also by several companies.

He maintains several national and international scientific collaborations. The results of his research activity have been presented in congresses and published in peer-review journals. Has been an evaluator of applications for master, doctoral and post-doc scholarships and has participated in project evaluation panels. José has also been referee in several international scientific journals within his areas of expertise.

Having acquired a sound knowledge on microscopic wood anatomy he has been responsible for analysis and identification of woods in archaeological, paleobotany, art history and forensic purposes, as well as supervising MSc dissertations and PhD theses on these contexts.

His current investigation interests are related with endomembrane trafficking and remodelling mechanisms in plant cells during development and in stress situations.
