Paulo Oliveira completed his undergraduate studies in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences, U.Porto (FCUP). His PhD studies were carried out at Uppsala University, Sweden, where he did also a post-doc. After returning to Portugal, he joined the Bioengineering and Synthetic Microbiology group at IBMC/i3S, U.Porto. Presently, P. Oliveira is Assistant Professor at FCUP, and researcher at CIIMAR, U.Porto, in the Cyanobacterial Natural Products group (https://www.ciimar.up.pt/teams/cyanobacterial-natural-products/), headed by Dr. Pedro Leão.

He has dedicated his scientific career to the study of cyanobacteria. In the last few years, his research has focused on cyanobacterial secretions mechanisms, particularly in the form of extracellular vesicles, developing methods for their isolation and characterization, identifying players involved in vesicle biogenesis, and unveiling biological roles. More recently, he contributed to demonstrate that cyanobacterial vesicles represent an innovative, biocompatible protein carrier system for fish, expanding the molecular toolbox available for the transport of biologically active proteins in aquaculture.
