Objectives

This curricular unit aims to develop in the student the ability to: integrate knowledge, handle complex issues, and find appropriate solutions; communicate his/her findings, knowledge and reasoning that underlie them. The student is also expected to develop the ability to undertake independent research in Physics, as well as deepen his/her knowledge in the scientific area of the Dissertation.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies outlined in the dissertation research program, through independent work under tutorial supervision.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Each student will have an individual research program leading to the presentation of an original scientific dissertation on a topic in Physics, specifically prepared for conclusion of this cycle of studies.

Mandatory literature

Various; Research articles and specialized literature relevant for each individual research project.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The research program is chosen to enable students to reach the intended learning outcomes. Such program will expose students to unique, complex and stimulating challenges, requiring the development of new capabilities, the deepening of others, and the acquisition of relevant knowledge for their future academic and/or professional careers.

Autonomous work under tutorial supervision is the approach that best enables students to develop the skills and competencies identified as learning outcomes. Particularly, the ability to undertake research in Physics in a relatively independent way.
