Suitable for English-speaking students

Objectives

It is intended that students understand the structure and dynamics of marine, estuarine and freshwater populations.

Learning outcomes and competences

The students should be able to perform scientific studies on aquatic population and use their knowledge for teaching or technical purposes.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Basic knowledge in marine biology.

Basic knowledge about spreadsheets.

Program

Animal Populations in freshwater, marine and estuarine ecosystems. Morphology, physiology and life cycles of key species. Aspects of population dynamics: recruitment, growth, reproduction and mortality. Environmental and anthropogenic factors influencing populations. Distribution areas and feeding habits. Techniques to study feeding, sexual maturation, growth and age. Computer models: FISAT, calculation of von Bertallanfy and Gompertz growth equations. Analysis of polymodal length frequency distributions. Maturity ogives.
