Suitable for English-speaking students
Objectives
It is intended that students understand the structure and dynamics of marine, estuarine and freshwater populations. Learning outcomes and competences
The students should be able to perform scientific studies on aquatic population and use their knowledge for teaching or technical purposes.
Working method
Presencial
Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)
Basic knowledge in marine biology.
Basic knowledge about spreadsheets.
Program
Animal Populations in freshwater, marine and estuarine ecosystems. Morphology, physiology and life cycles of key species. Aspects of population dynamics: recruitment, growth, reproduction and mortality. Environmental and anthropogenic factors influencing populations. Distribution areas and feeding habits. Techniques to study feeding, sexual maturation, growth and age. Computer models: FISAT, calculation of von Bertallanfy and Gompertz growth equations. Analysis of polymodal length frequency distributions. Maturity ogives.

Eligibility for exams
Students must attend 75% of classes, either theoretical or practical or and must deliver, present and discuss 75% of the requested reports.
Calculation formula of final grade
Final grade=exam+distribution assessment grade; exam-max.12; distr. grade-max. 8
Examinations or Special Assignments
one individual report will be prepared, presented and discussed
Classification improvement
Only for the final exam.
Observations
The evaluation by final exam will be carried out on the moodle UP platform. In order to contact the teachers, please go first to Prof. Natividade Vieira. For access to some items of the recommended bibliography please go to the offices of the teachers. The consultation of the tests must be done in the week following the publication of the results.
