Objectives
The aim of the course is to initiate students in research in Astronomy or Astrophysics, where they can increase the knowledge and skills gained in other courses. Contact with researchers in astronomy is encouraged to allow greater integration of the student in the working environment. This research work is developed based on tasks that enable the acquisition of knowledge by experience and approach of different methods / techniques.
Learning outcomes and competences
Being able to independently develop a research project in Astronomy or Astrophysics, to describe it in report, to present it and defend it in a discussion.
Working method
Presencial
Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)
Basic Astronomical and Astrophysical concepts
Program
Introduction of the topic by the supervisor.
The project, necessarily related to Astronomy or Astrophysics, can be theoretical, instrumental or computational. Each project has specific objectives, which will depend on the theme and work involved.
The program of the project is divided in 4 phases:
- Familiarization of the student with the subject including literature review.
- Work carried out on the project itself.
- Preparation of a final report describing the work done and analysis of the results obtained.
- Presentation of the final work in a short talk followed by discussion (questions and answers).
Mandatory literature
Karttunen H. 340;
Fundamental astronomy. ISBN: 3-540-60936-9
Teaching methods and learning activities
The supervisor gives a set of tasks to be implemented. The work is developed by the student autonomously throughout the semester, under the supersion of the researcher who proposed the project. The evaluation of the successful implementation of the work plan is based on a report submitted by the student and an oral presentation followed by discussion.
