Laboratory Practice in Physics and Electronics.
Familizarization of students with aspects of electronics and instrumentation needed to carry out experimental work, through the execution of a set of representative works in Physics and Electronics, including analysis of experimental data, calculation of errors, graphical representation and critical evaluation of the obtained results;
Promotion of the search of information relevant to the experimental work;
Preparation and writing of reports of experimental activities;
Development of group work skills.
Capabilities to carry out experimental work. Knowledge of the principles of operation and use of scientific instruments. Capacity of modeling and analysis of experimental results. Preparation and writing of reports of experimental activities.
Possible Laboratory assignments:
Series A
1. Equivalent circuits: Thévenin and Norton
2. Diode circuits
3. RLC filter
4. Capacitively coupled LC circuits
5. Monostable and Multivibrator circuits
6. OPAMP: Inverting, non-inverting and differentiating configurations
7. I-V characteristics of a npn transistor
8. AC amplifier with a transistor
Series B
1. Acoustic resonances in pipes
2. Thermal radiation
3. Signal propagation in a coaxial cable
4. Magnetic moment in circular coils
5. Determination of the elastic modulus of a material by the method of the vibrations of a cantilevered bar and the torsion pendulum
6. Determination of the coefficient of viscosity using Poiseuille's law
7. Magnetic induction
8. Study of the magnetic field created by a coil using a synchronous detection technique
9. measurement of an inductance and a mutual indutance with the Anderson bridge
Guidance and monitoring of the experimental work performed by the students. Weekly check and assment of the preparation of the work and analysis of obtained results.

To obtain access to the evaluation, the student must fulfil the following requirements:
Participate in, at least, 3/4 of the scheduled classes.
Prepare two written reports, one for each series.
Present a logbook with, at least, 3/4 of the practical assignments for each series completed.
Present a written report of a work from series A and a work from series B (both to be indicated by the instructor).
Continuous assessment: (35%)
1 - performance assessment and respective evolution in the
laboratory: 10%
2 - Evaluation of the last 4 works of each series in logbook: 25%.
Specific assessment: (65%)
1 - Evaluation of a report: 30% (one report drawn
for each series, 15% each)
2 - Individual laboratory test, which includes carrying out an
experiment drawn from among those indicated to be carried out
at the beginning of classes for each student, as well as brief
questions about other work: 35%
To obtain approval, they must have a grade equal to or greater
than 8.0 out of 20 in the continuous assessment and
specific assessment.
As all components for assessment require the completion of laboratory work, it is recommended that all students in this situation contact the lecturer to enable the realization of the practical component in a more flexible schedule according to staff availability.
Given the laboratorial nature of the Course, in order to improve an obtained final grade only the component corresponding to the "Individual Laboratory experiment plus Questions", will be considered, in "Época de Recurso" of the same academic year.
The other evaluation components may be subject to improvement only in the following academic year, in accordance with subparagraph b of paragraph 2 of Article 12 of the "Rules of evaluation of student achievement" of FCUP, through a new attendance to the Course. The corresponding registration is performed in the beggining of the academic year and accounted for in the maximum number of credits in which the student can enroll.
