Objectives

To know organic production as a strategy of agricultural production, it’s beginning and how it relates to other forms of sustainable agriculture

Learning outcomes and competences

It is expected students (1) know organic production and its regulation, (2) internalize the principles, advantages and constraints of this mode of production as an economic activity, (3) master production techniques in organic production namely protection and (4) become aware of the economic, ecological and social commitment that this mode of production may involve.

  1. Definition and characterization of the organic production. Comparison with other sustainable strategies of production. Possible reasons for increasing adherence to thisstrategy of production.

  2. The organic production as a preferred strategy for family agriculture, urban agriculture and social and therapeutic agriculture.

  3. General operations for crops installation and management in organic production.

  4. Protection of crops in organic production (strategy and pest control).

Teaching methods and learning activities

This Unit is organized in contact lectures and contact workshops (discussion, field and laboratory) at Campus of Vairão, may include visits to farms and a practical experience in an institution outside the University.
