Objectives

To acquire knowledge of the basic concepts of condensed matter physics such as crystal structures, Drude model and Sommerfeld theory, phonons, Bloch’s theorem, reciprocal space, tight binding model, the nearly free electron model, energy bands, semiconductors (an introduction). To introduce different types of materials, and how their properties depend on the microscopic structure. To familiarize oneself with experimental techniques for fundamental studies of materials.

Learning outcomes and competences

To have the the ability to derive some of the basic results of the models studied and of finding  answers to relatively elementary extensions of the models, demonstrating understanding of the basic principles and their relationships.

Working method

B-learning

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Knowledge of Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Physics, Thermodynamics and Electromagnetism.

Program

Geometry of solids: crystal structure; reciprocal lattice; Brillouin zone; waves in crystals

X-Ray diffraction - wave scattering by crystals

Specific heat of solids

Electrons in metals: Drude theory and Sommerfeld theory

Structure of materials

Lattice vibrations and thermal properties. Phonons. Tight Binding Chain.

Electrons in periodic potentials

Teaching methods and learning activities

This course has lectures (2 hours/ week) and problem-solving classes (1.5 hours / week). Learning contents are presented and discussed in lectures; problem-solving classes will focus on the demonstration of learning contents and their applications to current research topics. An instructional methodology of cooperative learning with whiteboarding will be used in problem-solving classes.
Private study.
