Objectives

The main goal of this UC is that students become familiar with the state-of-the-art in Medical Physics in its multiple branches through seminars on the most varied relevant and current topics in this area. Emerging topics, like advanced techniques and new trends in imaging and therapy, will be addressed in class. This will allow the student to contact, in present or remotely, with professors and researchers in non-existent research areas in Portugal.

The student should also acquire competencies in bibliography research and selection, as well as in understanding analyising, and discussing it.

In this UC, the student will acquire oral and written scientific result communication skills.

Program

Emerging topics in Medical Physics to be determined in every new academic year. Emerging topics include, but are not circunscript to: novel imaging (CBCT) and therapy approaches (protons, heavy ions), machine learningin radiotherapy, theranostics, new radiopharmaceuticals, radiomics, among other relevant topics in the state-of-the-art in Medical Physics as a whole

Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities

On the first six weeks,  three seminars will be selected on current “hot” topics in the state-of-the-art in Medical Physics in its multiple branches by the professors of the Masters.

On the following six weeks, the students will be divided in groups. Each group will have to choose one of the six topics  they had contact with in the previous weeks. The groups will then have to prepare a written work and an oral presentation about the scientific topic in question. These works will then be evaluated.

The students will be evaluated through written essay (50%) and oral presentation (50%)

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam
