Objectives
To provide basic knowledge about the biology of the major invertebrate phyla, namely about anatomy and systematics, using an evolutionary approach.
Learning outcomes and competences
To recognize specimens from the main phyla based on morphology. In some cases, students should be able to identify animals to a lower taxonomic level (e.g. Class, Order).
Students should be able to explain phylogenetic relationships between major groups and to understand the function and adaptative meaning of some body structures typical of some Phyla.
Working method
Presencial
Program
Principles of Systematic Zoology, Taxonomy, nomenclature and phylogeny. Animal architecture (structural/functional plan). Essentials of animal development. Biology of some major invertebrate groups: Kingdom Protista, Porifera, Cnidaria, Ctenophora. Protostomia: Spiralia (Platyhelminthes, Annelida, Mollusca and other small phyla of Spiralia, Gnathifera and Lophophorata; Ecdysozoa (Nematoida and Panarthropoda - Onychophora, Tardigrada and Arthropoda). Deuterostomia (Echinodermata).

Eligibility for exams
To be eligible for exams students should:
1- to attend at least 75% of the programmed laboratory works.
Students who have obtained attendance in previous school years may be granted (upon request made at the beginning of the school year) exemption from practical classes.
Calculation formula of final grade
The evaluation of the students will be based on the result of the final examination, which includs a theoretical part (14 values - 70%) and a practical part (6 values - 30%).
The evaluation will be presential.
Students with a classification ≥9.5/20, resulting from the final examination, will be aproved.
Oral tests will not be held.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Students with special status will be evaluated according the same rules established for all te other students. They are also obliged to do the final examination.
Classification improvement
The improvement of the final grade can be done according the "Evaluation Regulation of Students".
