Objectives

At the end of the course students are expected to have: 1. The basic knowledge on the botanical history and plant evolution as well as major systems of classification 2. Apprehended the Taxonomy and Systematic concepts, Classification and plant Nomenclature 3. Perception and comprehension of the main philosophical types behind different taxonomic schools and main differences between them 4. Acquired the morphological concepts and vocabulary necessary to describe plants 5. Developed the taxonomical skills needed for the identification of plants and management of biological collections 6. Learned the major lines of evolution in plants 7. Studied the major botanical groups, main differences between them, their evolution and characterization. To build and use a dichotomous key as well as to manage the necessary terms and concepts used to identify vascular plants.

Learning outcomes and competences

The competences to be acquired by the students are directly related to the aims described above.

Working method

B-learning

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Classification and Systematics. The Botanical Nomenclature. Fundamental concepts and definitions - the still current role of morphology and classical disciplines. Morphology of the plant body and its organs. Comparative synthesis of the main lineages of terrestrial plants - Non-avascular plants. Non-seeding Vascular Plants - Lycophyta and "Ferns"; Vascular plants with seeds I - Gymnospermae Vascular plants with seeds II - Angiospermae. Main Families of Portuguese Flora (Editado)Restaurar original

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Exame 60,00
Trabalho laboratorial 40,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 114,00
Frequência das aulas 48,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Students must attend 3/4 of the lab classes
For the practical assessement a minimum grade of 1.6 (in a total of 4) as well as the submission of 6 morphological examination forms i is necessary in order to be elegible to the theoretical exam.
The grading in the pratical assessment cannot be improved in any of the exams

Calculation formula of final grade

On this course the described items will contribute to the final grade in the following proportion: Theoretical exam - 80%; Practical assessment 20%

Final grade is the summ of the 2 grades

Minimum grade for approval is 9.50

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

For students with the special status of "working students" the practical component will be included in the final exam if conditions for a continued practical evaluation could not be met

Classification improvement

In the second exam season but no repetition of the practical assessment
