Teaching language

Portuguese

Objectives

To teach the basics of map projections and their implication in map production and geographical information storage. To describe the national map series in Portugal, both topographical and thematic.

Learning outcomes and competences

Knowledge of the different map projections and capability of converting coordiniates by own programming and by specific software.

Capability to analyse maps of topographic content, as well as thematic.

To know the portuguese map series and their map projection systems.

Working method

Presencial

Program

1. Introduction.
History of Cartography and revision basic concepts involved in Cartography.
2. Content and use of maps.
2.1. Example of topographic and thematic maps.
2.2. Analysis of map content and map reading.
2.3. Portuguese national cartographic series.
3. Map projections.
3.1. Aspect, classification and names of map projections.
3.2. Mathematical concepts involved in map projections.
3.3. Derivations of cylindrical projections of the sphere: a) Equidistant (Platté-Carré), b) Mercator, c) cylindrical equal-area.
3.4. Generalization to the ellipsoid.
3.5. Gauss projection. Principles for its derivation.
3.6. Modification of a map projection.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical lectures (2h/week) with topics presented with powerpoint slides, deductions in the blackboard, and demonstrations in specific software.
Practical lectures (2h/week) of map analysis and numerical calculations of map projections (Excel/Matlab, PROJ.4, QGIS)
Distributed assessment with final exam. Final mark is the average of the exam classification and the result of mini-tests done in the practical lectures along the semester.

Software

ArcGIS
PROJ.4

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Exame 50,00
Trabalho laboratorial 50,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Frequência das aulas 56,00
Total: 56,00

Eligibility for exams

Presence in the legal minimum of practical lectures, according to the general rules of FCUP.

Calculation formula of final grade

Two mini-tests (MT) will be done during the practical lectures.

Final classification = 50% MT + 50% exam.

(minimum of 8 points in 20, in both components)
