Objectives

Give students skills in: 1- identification of rocks by macroscopic examination; 2- in the manipulation of the technique of the stereographic projection in the resolution of geological problems.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should be able to: 1 - identify the main groups of rocks by analyzing hand samples; 2- to use the stereographic projection in the resolution of geological problems.

Program

Part I: INTRODUCTION TO STEREOGRAPHIC PROJECTION

  1. Principles and applications; advantages and disadvantages; The constituent elements: the maximum circles (meridians) and the smaller circles; The Wulff network and the Schmidt network.
  2. The projection of a plane and a lineage: marking of planes, straight lines of greater slope, lines perpendicular to a plane (plane pole). Marking a straight line through your rake (or pitch) on a plane.
  3. Marking of folded planes (anticlines, synclines and lying folds) and their elements (flanks, axial planes and folding axes).
  4. Angles between lineations, between planes and between planes and lineations, with relief for the smallest angle between a linear element and a plane.
  5. Rotation of lines and planes around an horizontal axis.

Part II: STUDY AND MACROCOPIC IDENTIFICATION OF ROCKS, of the following types:

Sedimentary rocks: common limestone, oolitic limestone, marl, argillite, siltite, sandstone, greywacke, shale, conglomerate, breccia, diatomite, coal.

Igneous rocks: granite, syenite, diorite, gabbro, anorthosite,  peridotite, basalt, rhyolite, pumite, porphyry, andesite, kimberlite.

Metamorphic rocks: slate, phyllite, schist, schist and phyllites with porphyroblasts, talc bearing-schist, gneiss, amphibolite, schistous amphybolite, marble, granulite, mafic granulite, eclogite, hornefels, migmatite, serpentinite.
