Teaching language

Portuguese

Objectives

To learn the technical and scientific principles that rules the production of grapes.
Develop skills that enable the application in the whole area of viticulture and winemaking of these principles and new production technologies, such as training systems, canopy management, water relations of the vine and mechanisation of the vineyard culture.

Learning outcomes and competences

Knowing the importance of the vine and wine sector in Portugal and in the world.

Know and apply the principles of management of vineyards throughout the vegetative cycle (pruning, maintenance of ground, canopy management, diseases and pests, planting of a vineyard).

Working method

Presencial

Program

1 – History and evolution of viticulture. Main Portuguese wine regions and types of wine produced.
2 – Origin and evolution of Vitáceas. Systematic. Selection of rootstocks.
3 – Morphology and Anatomy of the vine. Biological cycle.
4 – Ecophysiology of vine.
5 – Winter pruning.
6 – The propagation of the vine.
7 – Establishing of a vineyard.
8 – Training systems.
9 - Canopy management.

Comments from the literature

The presentations of lectures will be distributed.

We recommend the consultation of scientific journals such as the OENO ONE

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical content exposure, complemented by practical lessons in the vineyard of FCUP and visit to vineyards and wineries of the region. Report of the activities practices carried out in the vineyards shall be developed in class.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Exame 80,00
Trabalho de campo 5,00
Trabalho prático ou de projeto 15,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de relatório/dissertação/tese 4,00
Trabalho de campo 30,00
Total: 34,00

Eligibility for exams

Loses the frequency the student who miss more than a quarter of practical classes, or does not perform satisfactorily two thirds of the work of a laboratory

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade will result from the sum of the evaluation obtained in theoretical and practical components: the theoretical component, with weight of 80%, will be assessed through written test, while the practical part with weight of 20%, will be evaluated by means of two components, evaluation of reports (15%) and practical assessment of the operation of pruning of the vine (5%). The final note is obtained by the formula: Final Note = (T x R x 80% + 15% + d x 5%) T-Rank obtained in the test. (Will be admitted to test students who have attended 3/4 of practical classes). R-rating obtained in reports. P-rating obtained in the practical classes of pruning. The approval in the discipline is subject to obtaining a FINAL NOTE > = 9.5 values and minimum rating 8.0 values in all components (T, R and P).

Classification improvement

The improvement of the grade can be made independently on any of the components of the assessment: T, R and P. For improvement of R is required the presentation of new work and P is the frequency of lessons pruning practices.
