To know the main fruit trees, their distribution, climatic needs and the main techniques to install and manage an orchard.

  1. Introduction – fruit species cultivated in the world. Area, production and consume in the world and in Portugal. Main features of each group of fruit plants. Environmental factors that affect crop adaptation; growth requirements, dormancy and flowering. Climate and soil and water requirements

  2. 2.Orchard plantation. the site, plant orientation, soil preparation, plantation, watering. Plant propagation in fruit trees. Features of rootstoks. Plant biology – plant morphology and plant development from seedling to senescence.

  3. Orchard management- Pruning, Fructification in apple tree: apple tree type I, II, III and IV. Fitossanitary problemas and protection strategy. fertilization, irrigation and harvest.

Teaching methods and learning activities

There will be lectures, classes with topics presentation and discussion and field workshop in the orchard. Possibility to have a visit to a commercial orchard.

Eligibility for exams

Participation in classes according to regulation. Submissions (or presentation) of assigments are compulsory until the last class.

Calculation formula of final grade

Students will have to submit assignments (A) and tests (T). The final grade is calculated according the formula CF=0,4TA+ 0,6T.
Assigments (2) are individual. Assigments (3) are in groups. 

Examinations or Special Assignments

Students that are unable to be present on the day of the assessment test will be given an alternative opportunity to take the test in the last class.
Submission of group assignments is mandatory for all students including those with student worker status.
