Objectives

The main goal of this course is to provide general information and a basic knowledge about the definition, characterization and management of solid wastes. The teaching is oriented on the understanding of the management options that are currently being implemented in the Porto Area which is achieved by performing several study visits.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this course the student will have acquired knowledge, skills and competencies to:

Understand:
- the need to make a proper management of solid waste
- the need to implement systems for solid waste management
- the purpose of solid waste management.

Skills:
- Decide about the need to implement a system of solid waste management
- Manage a project of solid waste management
- Decide the best suited technologies to a particular problem
- Apply the techniques of solid waste treatment
- Apply lifecycle assessment of management systems for solid waste
- Communicate orally and in writing the procedures for quality control of a given problem, including all aspects presented in Knowledge.

Knowledge:
- The selection of the best techniques for solid waste treatment
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of treatment and management of solid waste

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes are used to introduce the theoretical and technological concepts of solid waste treatment, as well as solid waste management strategies.
In practical classes students visit management units and treatment of solid waste from Porto area. Also, in practical classes will be developed landfill construction projects and composting plants. Each student must submit a written report on one of the visits and projects developed. The students must form groups who work a specific theme related to solid waste, which will be presented and defended orally at predetermined dates during the semester.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Exame 50,00
Trabalho de campo 20,00
Trabalho laboratorial 30,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 106,00
Frequência das aulas 56,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Frequency of practical classes and completion of the proposed work.

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation consists of a report on one of the study visits (TC), a report of the laboratorial project (PL) and a final exam of evaluation (FE). The PL report must have a biblographic revision about the theory and applications of the studied subject.

 Final grade = 0,50xFE + 0,20xTC + 0,30xTL

Classification improvement

The improvemment of the classification can only by the final exam in the time of appeal.
