Suitable for English-speaking students

Objectives

To transmit general knowledge about the traditional representation of Geographic Information on maps.
Learn basic notions about the different techniques of acquisition of Geographic information, either by survey techniques in the field, or from aerial and satellite images.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the course students will know the methods for GI data collection, their structuring, validation and representation. They will also be able to carry operations of GIS data analysis, both in vector and raster domains.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes aim to transmit the bases on geographic information and are divided into several themes. In practical classes exercises are carried out on the topic exposed in the theoretical classes. Some of the practical classes will be held outside (FCUP facilities). In this way, there is a very strong link between these two fundamental components so that the student can understand the principles exposed on each theme.

Software

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Exame 60,00
Trabalho laboratorial 40,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Frequência das aulas 28,00
Trabalho laboratorial 28,00
Total: 56,00

Eligibility for exams

75% of presences. Practical performance (P) – minimum 40% (8/20).

Calculation formula of final grade

Final classification (F) is obtained by: F = 0.6*E + 0.4*P

E - clasification of written exam

P -  practical evaluation

Minimum of 40% (8 in 20) in both components.

Students with classification above 80% (16 in 20) may have an extra oral exam.
