Teaching language

Suitable for English-speaking students

Objectives

To provide theoretical and practical basis to understand organization and function of the main systems of the animal body.

Learning outcomes and competences

Understanding of the physiology of the main animal systems.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Introduction to Human Histology and Physiology. Histology of main tissues. Gastrointestinal tract: organization, secretions, motility, digestion and absorption. Functional states of the organisms and their regulation. The Kidney and body fluid homeostasis. Cardiovascular system and its control. Gas exchange and gas transport in the blood and regulation of the respiratory system.

Mandatory literature

Widmayer, Raff & Strang; Fisiologia Humana, 2006
Junqueira & Carneiro; Histologia Básica, 2006

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical and practical lectures

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Exame 100,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Frequência das aulas 48,00
Total: 48,00

Eligibility for exams

Final examination: theoretical part (14/20) + theoretical-practical part (6/20). Student’s presence in practical classes is mandatory. Students can not miss more then ¼ of the expected practical classes. Exception is made for the worker students. Students may ask by e-mail for dispensation if they obtained frequency in the previous year.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final examination: theoretical part (14/20) and theoretical-practical part (6/20). The final examination can be substituted by 2 evaluations (each one consisting of a theoretical part - 14/20 and a theorical-pratical part -6/20. Final classification: arithemetical mean of the two evaluations)
The students with a classification ≥ 9,5  will be approved. No oral examination will take place.

Examinations or Special Assignments

-

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

-

Classification improvement

Final Examen during the period legally established. Final Examen: Theoretical Part (14/20) + Theoretical-Practical Part (6/20).
