Objectives

The teaching of this course unit has as main objective the acquisition of knowledge, its integration, understanding and interpretation on the genesis and the geological and structural evolution of the different geotectonic and stratigraphic units that we recognize in Portugal and in the Iberian Peninsula, with the correct correlation to the units which are located elsewhere in the world, in a temporal and multidisciplinary perspective that encompasses knowledge in the various areas of Geological Sciences. The practical classes have as main objective the knowledge and the geological and structural interpretation of the geological cartography, and of observations made in field lessons.

Learning outcomes and competences

This course unit is intended for students in the 1st cycle, and the program content has been defined according to the objectives and competences to be acquired by the students. The different morphostructural zones recognized for the Iberian Peninsula are presented and the respective delimitation, distinction and geological and structural characterization are made for the Iberian massif (Hercynian cycle), mesozoic edges (Alpine cycle) and mouths of the great rivers (Tejo and Sado) . For each of the zones constituting the Iberian massif and that exist in Portugal the integrated characterization of stratigraphy, tectonics, magmatism and metamorphism in relation to plate tectonics and the Wilson cycle is made. The analysis of the geology of the edges and terrains of the Cenozoic focuses mainly on the eustatic and tectonic controls responsible for the sedimentary sequences, also integrating the magmatism. As support, in addition to the field lessons, geological mapping are analyzed and interpreted.
As competences, reaching these objectives, the geologist will be prepared to integrate and contextualize, either regionally or globally, the geology of the area in which he is working.

Teaching methods and learning activities

In the classes the exhibition and discussion of the themes is done with the aid of a video projector using slides with the necessary interpretative elements to what is indicated in the maps and related interpretation; these elements are subsequently made available online to students. The observation, analysis and interpretation of geological maps is done by distributing the maps to the students and posing questions for which the construction of evolutionary models is required from the integration of the cartographic elements. The field classes function as a support for the recognition and analysis of the reality that is mapped.
During classes with distance learning, the methodology is maintained with the exception of field classes, which are replaced by observation, analysis and integration of elements projected or taken from the recommended bibliography.

Eligibility for exams

Frequency acquisition: According to what is stipulated in the Statutes of FCUP. Students who are required to attend classes but who have obtained this frequency in the year immediately preceding, not having passed from other school years, may require exemption from attendance to classes.
Evaluation formula: Final exam with theoretical component (T) for 14 values and with practical component (P) for 6 values.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final grade - T + P equal or higher than 9.5 for approval with positive classification.
Note I: Mandatory on both exams, with a minimum mark of 7 on the 0-20 scale, for each part (T and P) of the exam.
Note II: Required oral examination for classifications of 18 or higher.

Observations

The regime of classes (distance or face-to-face education) will take place according to the guidelines of the governing bodies of FCUP. The same regarding the exam (s), although giving preference to face-to-face exam.
During distance classes, the use of a webcam with active video is mandatory.
