Objectives

The course completes the background on agriculture and agronomy by providing an integrated view of the main of crop and animal production systems.

After attending the course, students should: 1) understand the crop intensification techniques and practices used on specialized areas of agronomy 2) be able to project basic crop water and irrigation requirements systems; 3) know the decision making in integrated pest management; 4) integrate a multidisciplinary team to study complex problems at the agricultural system level.

Learning outcomes and competences

- To support the integration of agronomic components in landscape architecture projects with different functionalities (e.g. ornament, sports).

- understand the physiological principles and the techniques used on specialized areas of agronomy and agro-livetock activities and respective efficient integration in Landscape architecture.

- Be able to integrate a multidisciplinary team to study complex problems at the agricultural system level (Landscape).

- Develop an integrative vision of agriculture in the promotion of ecosystem services at different levels.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The lectures will be given based on Power Point presentations where the information will be systematized and, whenever possible, visual exemplification will be used (photographs, diagrams, videos, pictures). The practical classes will include trials with vegetable and flower´s greenhouse crops (at Campus e Vairão), study visit to a hydroponic cut flower grower, field class on viticulture and analytical work activities and discussion about "real case study" of animal farming and its environmental impacts. The practical classes will be interspersed with the lectures to allow the students a fast application of the knowledge gained in the respective lectures.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Exame 75,00
Trabalho de campo 12,00
Trabalho prático ou de projeto 13,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de projeto 28,00
Estudo autónomo 60,00
Trabalho de campo 12,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

- Attending a minimum of 75% of the classes in the course (FCUP rules:https://sigarra.up.pt/up/LEGISLACAO_GERAL.ver_legislacao?p_nr=4025)

- All students, even students with special frequency (e.g. students work, mobility) must deliver and present the practical assignments provided for the UC before taking the exam in any of the periods (“normal”, “recurso” e “especial”)

Calculation formula of final grade

  • Writen exam (EE).

  • Pratical work(TPmc): irrigation

  • Pratical work (TPaa): crop protection

CF = (EEmc x 0,70 + TPmcx0,30) x 0,58 + AVaa x 0,14 + AVsc x 0,14 + AVab x 0,14

Ponderation: 58 % Mário Cunha MC), 14% Ana Aguiar (AA), Susana Carvalho (14%) e 14% Albano Beja (AB).

Students are approved when UC a CF>10 and each part of the grade must be > 8.
Improvement of the grade is only possible for the teoretical component, though realization of the EE.

In case that any of the foreseen tests is not carried out, the percentage value assigned in the classification will be distributed proportionally to the other tests.

Examinations or Special Assignments

To access at the special examination the student will have to carry out all the planned works TPn . The student who intends to do this test must contact the Professor before the exam (1 week) so that the protocols are available for the practical work.

Internship work/project

n.a.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Working students must complete all practical assignments (TPn) prior to submitting to the regular exam or "exame de recurso".

Classification improvement

Improvement of the grade is only possible for the teoretical component, though realization of the EE
