Objectives

Interpretation and cartographic representation, involving different geological aspects (geological contacts; chronostratigraphic units, lithostratigraphic units, biostratigraphic units, structures). Preparation of a block diagram and corresponding report interpretive of geology and structure.

Learning outcomes and competences

The development of the course aims to develop the following skills in the student:

- be able and use cartographic representation symbology;

- be able from a geological chart to create profiles and diagram block, observe and interpret geology and geological structures;

- be able to interpret and represent data according to the cartographic scale.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Part 1 presential work

- Fieldwork with the entire group of students with teacher support: Recognition of geographical and geological of field study, in a Variscan context:- Main lithological units and characterization of different types of rocks; - most stricking structural characteristics  at regional and local scale (folds, faults, diaclases, foliation, lineation) and observation of the main types of geological contacts between the different units.

Part 2 distance classes

–Based on the geological map 9_D at a scale of 1: 50,000 and with the help of Google Earth, realization of geological profiles that interpret the geology and structure of the sector under study. Elaboration of a diagram block, based on the profiles, allowing a better interpretation of the geological structure and the relationship between geology and topography.

- Preparation of the individual report with interpretation of the diagram block and geological profiles, making reference to geomorphology, stratigraphic sequence, paleontology, structures, geological resources complementing with the information from the most recent publications in which there is new data.

- Final discussion of the work and evaluation.
