Objectives
- To acquire and consolidate competences in small/medium scale public space project.
- To acquire and consolidate competences in site assessment and site analysis.
- To acquire and consolidate competences of space organization according to functional, aesthetic, ecological and economic criteria.
- To acquire and consolidate competences in sustainable design.
- To acquire competences in the development of a Landscape Architecture Master Plan.
- To acquire and consolidate graphic competences.
- To acquire and consolidate competences in computer aided design.
Learning outcomes and competences
In this course, the students will acquire/ enhance their competences in site survey and analysis; develop an intervention program and a design proposal for small and medium scale public spaces; hand-in the schematic design drawings.
Students will also develop digital communication skills.

- Outer space as the project area for Landscape Architecture.
- Main design components of outdoor spaces - topography, vegetation, water and built structures.
- Scale, dimensioning and materials. Exploring aesthetic and functional realities: shape, line, color, texture, seasonal dynamics, sound, smell, touch, active and passive recreation, circulation, cultivation, protection, partitioning, reception, preservation and promotion of wildlife.
- Landscape Architecture project and its components (phases, drawings, written documents and models).
- Sketching the space: zoning - areas of activity and movements (plots and corridors), the exploration of form.
- Design principles in Landscape Architecture.
- The garden as a planned and designed outdoor space
- Freehand drawing and computer aided design.

Teaching methods and learning activities
- Site Assessment and Site Analysis: i) land survey; ii) vegetation survey; iii) built structure and heritage survey; iv) use of space survey; v) surroundings analysis. (Group Work)
- Elaboration of a Site Proposal: Conceptual Plan and Master Plan. Production of a poster in A1 format portrait. (Individual work).
- Elaboration of a Master Plan, materialized in technical drawings, written pieces, and 3D models. Production of an A0 Poster format. (Individual Work)

Eligibility for exams
Students must attend 75% of the lectures and studio classes.
Students must comply with all the evaluation moments
Calculation formula of final grade
Project 1 – Jardim do Ovo (Rua D. Manuel Bandeira - Porto)
- 20% Survey and analysis (group work)
- 30% Proposal (individual work)
- 50% Master plan (individual work)
There will be a minimum grade of 8 points for each of the assessment moments; grades bellow 10 imply an oral exam.
