Objectives

Start learning the design of small scale outdoor spaces in the context of lanscape architecture project according to ecological, social and aesthetical principles.
Aspects such as place adequacy, sustainability and identity are specially facilitated.


Learning outcomes and competences

Ability for creating, representing and communicating intervention proposals for small scale outdoor spaces, regarding a programme which articulates the human use in the proximity of a continuous and diverse green structure, through hand drawing, physical and digital models (sketch up).

Program

1. The garden: concept and short history; proximity, views and context; meaning, creation, transformation and conservation. My favourite garden.

2. Space, form, function and dynamics of the outdoor space.
Open spaces, edged spaces and closed spaces; patches and corridors; phisical and visual axis. Geometric and naturalistic forms: orthogonal, angular, circular and biophysical.

3. Programe, zoning and first draft. The essential conditions of a place: climate; sun and wind exposure; geology, topography, water circulation and soil; flora and fauna; heritage values, vitas and immediate surroundings.

4. Drafting and drawing the outdoor space. Basic guidelines: sptatial organization; landform; water; vegetation; and built structures.

5. Gardens are for people / gardens are for nature. 
Different garden spaces for: shelter and accommodation; entrance, reception and parking; circulation and movement; seating, eating, intimacy and contemplation; cultivation and husbandry; framing and edging; biodiversity and aesthetics promotion; working, storing and recycling; celebrating, partying, playing and sports.

6.The small scale outdoor space design project as a fundamental exercise for learning systemic and holistic landscape interventionts.
