Objectives

It is aimed to teach advanced Remote Sensing techniques, complementary to already acquired knowledge in this field in previous courses

Learning outcomes and competences

 Students are expected to:
• Acquire complementary skills in topics such as: orbits of remote sensing satellites, high spatial resolution and hyperspectral sensors, image processing techniques,•
• Understand the basic principles and applications of various Remote Sensing techniques, such as: satellite altimetry, SAR interferometry, Remote Sensing of vegetation, etc.
• Acquire competences in the analysis and processing of various types of remote sensing data.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

To have attended first degree courses on Remote Sensing.

Program

1. Satellite orbits. Types of orbits used in remote sensing satellites and how these affect RS data collection.

2. High spatial and spectral resolution remote sensing satellites

3. Remote Sensing of vegetation

4. Radar Altimetry. Principles and applications.

5. SAR Interferometry

6. Remote Sensing of the Earth gravity field

7. Use of various software for processing remote sensing data.

Evaluation Type

Evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Prova oral 30,00
Trabalho escrito 70,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de relatório/dissertação/tese 30,00
Estudo autónomo 40,00
Frequência das aulas 30,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

Attendance of classes is compulsory. The general rules of FCUP shall apply.

Calculation formula of final grade

Assessment has two components:
(1) AT - an individual report, presented in the form of a paper. The topics of the reports are chosen from a list of provided topics. Assessment includes an oral presentation and discussion of the report.
The AT mark is the mark obtained in the individual report with a weight of 70% given o the written report and 30% to the oral presentation and discussion.
(2) AP - a pratical work, made in one of the software learnt during the course, presented in the form of a individual reportt.
The final mark is a weignted mean of the AT and AP components, with a weight of 60% given to AT and 40% to AP.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not applicable

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Te assessment method is the same as for regular students

Classification improvement

The students can use the methods predicted in the general University rules for mark improvement
