The student should be able to participate in a multidisciplinary team under the framework of a water resources managing process, executing with a medium degree of autonomy all the tasks involved in this kind of process.
The learning outcomes of the discipline translate in the development of the skills previously defined.1 - Introduction to water resources managing process.Surface and underground resources. The water cycle.
2 - Basic notions of aquatic ecology. Basic notions of aquatic geomorphology.
3 - Methods in aquatic ecology and geomorphology. Sampling of diatoms, macroinvertebrates, macrophytes and fish in rivers. Sampling of plankton and fishes in lakes and reservoirs. RHS. QBR. GQC: Interpreting water quality results using biotic indicators and indexes: EQR.
4 - Managing water resources - general principles; legislation (WFD, law 54/2005, law 58/2005, Decreto-Lei 77/2006); the tipology of the portuguese rivers; PGRH.
5 - Water uses - abstraction; WTP and STP's; industrial uses; reservoirs; navigation; case studies.
6 - Restoring aquatic ecosystems - general principles; methodologies; case studies.
7 - Basic concepts of hydrogeology - economic importance of underground water. Dynamics of aquifer systems. Sustainable management of aquifer systems.
8 – Field trip for the observation of several hidrological processes.Theoretical classes, using slide show presentations.
