To introduce the basic ideas and principles of Statistics, at an elementary mathematical level.
- Be able to identify the techniques of descriptive statistics appropriate to organize and summarize a data set, and how to apply them;
- Understand the fundamental concepts of probability theory;
- Be able to characterize random variables and their probability distributions; understand the specific characteristics and know how to apply the binomial and the normal distribution;
- Infer about the characteristics of a population based on a sample using point and interval estimation;
- Understand the general procedures and know how to use hypothesis tests.
1. Brief introduction to the objectives and methodology of statistics.
2. Descriptive Statistics and exploratory data analysis: summarizing data (tables, graphs, measures of location and dispersion).
3. Statistical regularity. Elementary probability concepts, conditional probability and independence. Random variables, probability distributions, moments. Two-dimensional random variables, independence and conditioning, correlation.
4. Discrete distributions (with special attention to binomial distribution) and continuous (with special attention to normal distribution); the central limit theorem.
5. Statistical inference: point estimation, interval estimation and hypothesis testing (mean, comparison of means, proportions, comparison of proportions).
The contents of the syllabus are mainly presented in the lectures, providing examples in order to illustrate and motivate the concepts and methods considered. Some specific topics are only presented in the classes, where exercises and related problems are solved and discussed.
All resources are available for the students at the unit’s web page.

The final grade is the score of the final exam, combined with the score of a special test for students that obtained a score over 17. Students having a score over 17 in the exam must take the extra test, otherwise their final score will be 17.
